The rights of "stupid" people ?

I recently read the following in a thread, ""Most of those former jeans workers are too stupid to do anything but drink beer and or 20/20, shop at Walmart, and watch NASCAR."

Ignoring the type casting of a whole group of people as subhuman, it's my opinion that modern first world life has gotton too complicated for many people to handle. What, if anything, should be done? We live in a society where over production is a problem. If people can't make it in this society, do we abandon them, beat them harder to make them learn, or something else?

If this post doesn't irritate enough people, I'll post some suggested solutions.

I thought "20/20" was a television news program? No? Am I hopelessly out of touch with the "cool" kids? ;)

I presume, but do not know, that "20/20" refers to what is popularly known as "Mad Dog 20/20." This is Mogan David wine fortified to reach 20% alcohol content. Wine so thick a knife will stand up in it.

I'll admit it..I am a snob and look down on those less educated/informed/whatever than me.

I don't dislike poor people. I dislike people who are complacent and revel in thier own ignorance, or who are extremely ignorant and don't know it.

1 solution, pass a law limiting TV watching to at most 1 hour a day, and build tons of libraries.

No, it doesn't really make me feel better about myself. Its more that those people just annoy me intensly.

No no, you look down on those who you percieve to be less educated than you, you better keep churning out those power point presentations, because everyone on earth knows how much brain power you need for that. Just wondering what do you do for a living that gives you this right to be so snobby.

There's nothing more dangerous than a stupid person. I like to avoid them whenever possible.... of course my ex-girlfriend was one of them.... I seem to be vulnerable to the ones with nice................. features.

What is it you do that makes you so much better than those who you consider beneath you?

Read Books. Pick up the newspaper, try and look at things from other perspectives.

The people who don't do those things are usually the same ones who are glad we "kicked" Iraq's ass because they were involved in 9/11

Allright, that was wrong of me to say. Okay, I hate uninformed people especially those who don't care to be informed.

Okay, in my book stupid = uninformed, uninterested, and complacent it doesn't really have anything to do with intelligence as such.

assuming the television show i saw was correct..
china still has a HUGE (200-300 million people) amount of underemployed people in rural, farming
areas. these people will "come on line" as china continues to grow its economy,
and they are expected to enter the manufacturing areas..

while the sucking sound for manufacturing plants and jobs is now coming from china (they are even
sucking jobs away from mexico and india)....their biggest threat is automated manufacturing,
where a computer controlled device replaces multiple people on a manfucturing line....

we do indeed live in a complex, evolving planet...
i do not know the answers..
manufacturing jobs are leaving the U.S. like crazy....
they are eventually going to "leave" china as well.....or at least they are goinmg to face a much larger
problem with unemployed or underemployed people...

Tnitsuj, I deliberately DID NOT mention your name as the originator of the stupid statement (no pun intended). I actually think that the largest problem facing the United States -- and eventually the world -- is, what do you do with people who cannot keep up with the requirements of modern society? I happen to think that they're human beings and entitled to everything to which I'm entitled. We're talking about human beings. The fact of the matter is, right now we value the skills I have -- language and the manipulation of abstract ideas. But not so long ago, the ability to pick up heavy weights was more valuable -- and it may be again. Please remember, when you want to crap all over these people, they are people. And, hard as it is to believe, so are Iraqis and other "ragheads."

It could almost be as destructive to the well-being of America as the mechanization of farming!! What on EARTH will all those unemployed farmers do?! We have machines harvesting all our produce! Even the animal breeders will suffer! It's the end of the world!

I don't think there are any easy answers. Do we let Darwin and evolution take care of it for us? Do we continue to support those that can't keep up just because they are human?

I honestly don't mean to sound cold hearted just throwing out a couple of points. I do believe that tnitsuj makes a good point however and that is education is key. Knowledge is and will be very important in the future and those that have it will thrive and those that don't will falter.

This is a toughie

I assume, then, that it is OK with you if I look down upon you since you are obviously less educated than I am. First, only an ignorant person would equate "ignorant" with "stupid". They are completely different. Second, only an ignorant person says "I [ ... ] look down on those less educated... than me." This is grammatically incorrect. It should be "less (whatever) than I," as in "than I am[/u]."

ITJunkie, I don't think Darwinism would work out the way you seem to think it will. I think it's quite likely that these human "dinosaurs" might have some strong objections to their "extinction." They aren't going to be nice enough to fade away neatly and out of sight. In fact, as the French monarchy found out in the 18th century, these people can be unpleasant. I personally would rather pay some taxes and try to provide educational and economic opportunity, even if it's largely make work, than to fight an armed battle in the streets.

The issue has nothing to do with darwinism or evolution or genetics. Darwinism would actually indicate that killing off one homogenous group of people, resulting in the loss of diversity, is actually harmful to the survival and future evolutionary possibilities of the species.

It's education. However, it's impossible to educate someone who doesn't want to learn, and it's not necessary to educate someone who does want to learn.
