The Right Video Card Help

Hello guys,

This is my first time posting, I've been a lurker for a couple weeks now. I need help choosing a video card for a new system that I'm building (AMD 1.4). I need a video card that will be great for games, has hardware mpeg-2 decoding, and at least an s-video in. Currently I'm looking to get the Elsa Gladiac 920. I won't be doing any hardcore 3D stuff, but I would like to mess around with some video editing and the likes, and of course games are always good. Also I'll be watching DVD's on my machine as well. I'm trying to keep the price below $350. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

I also wish to hold off on upgrading for as long as possible. So the brand new cards that have just come out (Titanium) with price tags of around $400 don't really scare me as long as it will last me a while. Thanks again.

The best cards to buy are almost here. I would recommend either the Radeon 8500 or the GF3 Ti 200. Both should offer great, if not unbeatable price/performance ratios.

Any GeForce3 should cost you under $350 US. You weren't talking Canadian or Singapore Dollars, or were you? You might want to think about the philosophical choice between buy the latest and hold, vs. buy one level back and upgrade often. Gamers don't tend to keep video cards for more than two years - but a year is probably more common. My favorite business apps card is now five years old. I'm about to replace a six month old gaming card. Go figure...
