The right to be downright offensive

BBC World did an interesting story on this a few nights ago.

What is particlarly interesting is both sides have valid points. How far can you go?

very interesting article 🙂

"Only last week, the comedian Rowan Atkinson led a call defending "the right to offend", against government plans to outlaw incitement to religious hatred. "

Free Speech Pffft

That is at least one thing you Americans can be thankful for right now, the strongest free speech protections of the first world nations.

Without freedom of speech, we would be mindless curs. We must have a strong dialectic tension to maintain TOLERANCE for free speech. You can't run a marathon by only running from your bedroom to your kitchen. You must stress the body to run 26.2 miles. The same is true for freedom of speech. You only know you have it when people tolerate listening to extreme views different from their own views. Freedom of speech is like flour to a tolerance tortilla.

If we limit freedom of speech, ultimately tyrrany will prevail. Any attempt to impose balance will only impose orthodoxy.

If you don't like what someone says, ignore them.

Yes, I heard that story. Don't agree both sides had valid points. The religious folk appear to want the right to NOT be offended. That is childish and absurd.

Sometimes I think that without these types of laws, many countries would be participating in all-out genocide of certain elements within their own population. With or without these laws, it's going to be a negative no matter what.
