Well, if you consider a family earning 200k plus.
Where do they live?
Well, the top 10 states might surprise you (note that its a percentage of the population).
1. District of Columbia
2. Connecticut
3. New Jersey
4. Maryland
5. Massachusetts
6. California
7. Virginia
8. New York
9. Hawaii
10. Illinois

Wow. I guess high taxes and high services really does make you healthy, wealthy and wise.

interesting...I have lived in 6 of those states-dc is a state of mind-and can say all had higher costs of living.

If Hawaiian public schools were better we would be living there now...

Now research which states are likely to be bankrupt in the very near future and cross-reference them. It's a short list so it shouldn't be a big deal. Feel free to then give us any opinions you may form from that information.

Leave it to the forum dunce to forget to factor in extremely high costs of living into the equation. People making $250K in those areas are not rich by any standards their pay is just adjusted for the high cost of living which incidentally is the liberal government premium that ends up being levied on everything.

Get a clue. Remember how correlation doesn't equal causation.

Rich people tend to be centered around the largest cities in the country. What a surprise.

Excellent point. Just don't expect them to listen to it.

You still don't get it. They live in those states/cities because that is where their job is that pays that high and it pays that high because of the high cost of living. They may want to leave but if they work for someone else they are not likely to make that kind of money where the COL is much lower. Depending on industry they may have no other choice when it comes to where they live. By the time you factor in the high taxes and high COL they really are not all that rich either. $200K in those places isn't really rich.

Orange County, one of the most conservative in California was the one to go bankrupt in the 90s.

BS. I have lived in more than half of those states and yes the COL is higher there. I was in no way stuck there though and had enough brains to realize that I could have close to the same quality of living living in another state like my current one and make less while spending less.

Now in places where your specialization like say LA for the editing I used to do or NYC for my music became necessary because either those industries require to live in a specific location or the location has some other strategic value..

Places like NY and CA not only had high cost of living they also had the highest QUALITY of living for what I was looking for at those times..

Would you rather live in La Jolla or Tulsa? I have lived in both places and had a good life in both but the sheer awesomeness of La Jolla trumped the lower cost of tulsa for a distinct portion of my life. Now would I rather use my equity to live in a nice 2 br house in Sand Diego or live in a 6 thousand square foot house with acreage in suburban Tulsa?

I choose Tulsa. I travel when I need something different.

Good choice! Property is super cheap there now and your money goes a LONG way...

I'm currently on 78.5 acres in a house we built 3 years ago. Not in any city's corporate limits, but I'm 30 minutes from my job downtown and I don't have to deal with idiot neighbors. :D

What's the most expensive thing people pay? Housing..... which is definitely not the same in every state.

Parking is another one. In shit hole towns nobody cares about, parking is free or almost free. Where I live, parking is up around $3,000 per year. Real estate websites also list parking stalls for sale, a bargain at only $20,000 per stall! :D

Fuel cost is another one. If you can't afford to live in the city, you could always live 50 miles outside of the city and get raped on fuel costs. My fuel budget is in the $2000-$2500 range per year.

Tax rates are a big deal. About 1/3 of my pay goes to taxes. Living in location A vs location B could change the income tax rate by thousands of dollars. Then factor in your property taxes and holy shit where did all my money go?

Some guy making $20/h in Assfuck, Nowhere lives like a king compared to a guy making $30/h in Chicago.

There's another factor at play. Most people don't move far from where they grew up. According to the census bureau, only 19 percent of Americans move to another State. If you start talking about distance rather than States, only 1 in 10 moves further than 150 miles from where they were born.

Red states and blue states are a myth. The reality is blue urban and red rural. Blue states, the ones dominating that list, are the ones with big urban populations. Rich people prefer urban.

As Infohawk already mentioned, correlation doesn't equal causation, but as dumb as you are, I don't expect you to understand that. Good night, what an idiot!

What should really leap out at you from that list is just how lucrative "public service" is. DC, MD, and VA are all on that list due to DC and it's suburbs. If that is not enough consider that the recession has barely grazed the DC metro area. Sure housing prices took a tumble and unemployment ticked up a couple of points to 5.8% but that is far below the 9.5% nationwide rate.

That's what happens when the largest stealer of weath in the world is in one city. That city tends to fair better than others.

Jobs don't pay high because of the high cost of living. Some cities are the engines of commerce for the economy and that's why jobs in those locations pay high.

the wealthy and powerful lived in and around NYC, boston, chicago, and DC long before the welfare state came along. well, maybe not DC as much because the growth of government power has been the driver of a lot of influence peddling in DC, and therefore a lot of wealth concentrating around there.

this '250,000 in NYC is like 50,000 in omaha' bullshit has got to stop.
