The RIAA is after me!!!

So I get home from my gf's house tonight, and my mother tells me she got a weird phone call. Apparently RoadRunner called, and mentioned that the RIAA complained to them about my server because of my thousands of mp3s available for download. So immediately I'm thinking "oh sh|t," but the guy who called basically said that as long as I restrict anonymous user access to my server, it'll be ok. Odd, since in RR's user agreement, they explicitly forbid running servers, but hey, I'm not complaining.

I don't know who has been leeching off my server, since I never broadcast the address or advertised it, but if any of you guys were doing it, it is no more. I may not even use it anymore, now that I found a reliable image hosting server and use my school FTP account to upload my programs from work.

Anyway, I have to call this guy back and let him know all is fixed... With any luck, the RIAA won't come busting down my door and put me in shackles to lead me to town square so they lock me in the stocks as an example to the rest of the townsfolk....

I haven't run a server in a long time. The way I see it is if I'm a downloader I'll be the last to get nabbed as the RIAA and whoever else gets the servers first. So I'll have time 🙂

not sure if it was the RIAA, but Timewarner RR called me about Kazaa and sharing three programs...MS SQL server, MS Exchange server and another one...can't think of the name. Regardless, he was pretty cool about it and said "either disable sharing completely or stop sharing those files". I pulled the files from my shared folder and i haven't had a problem since. My RR rocks!

Be careful. Tons of busts in the scene lately. Bunches of courriers for some major top sites all got busted. The FBI is really into this stuff. Especially people who host servers and people who are parts of the release groups.

I'd be doing a low-level format if I were you, then searching for some magnets . . .

Just install PGP and wipe free space like 20 times. Or better yet use it to delete the mp3's.

Still not good enough. I'd wipe the drive 35 times and then open the drive, run a magnet over it, and then bash the disk to pieces.

I'd also start buying the CD's of the artists they're going to allege you pirated. Throw away the receipts.... make the CD jewel case look a bit old.. fold the papers inside a bit and pray the judge is merciful.

Save the MP'3 on a BIG HDD and tell your buddy to "stash" it away for you. When you get ou tin 3-5 years... it'll be all worth it.. I mean... umm damn man. 🙁

Haha you can wipe your hard drive all you want, doesn't do any good.

Really though, it might be a joke, I did this to a friend of mine about 2 months ago... had a co-worker trick him into thinking the RIAA was coming for him. I wish I had a chat log but damn MSN messenger doesn't keep them, he was big time freaking out though.

or just format the drive and sell it in the FS/FT dept heh...luckily with over 320 gigs on my server i have absolutly no illegal software. every MP3 and app was paid for with my bandwidth bill 😉

I wouldn't worry about it... there is a lot of empty threats going on, but you are right with regards to the user agreement and the TOS... so the agent that called you was decent about things. Basically they event track slow browsing issues, and if there is no maintenance, outages, etc or any reasons for access to be slow, they'll determine what nodes are taking more bandwidth than they should and isolate it down to the exact user.

A lot of times I've seen them just pull peoples accounts entirely, and when they do that.... that is when you should be worried.
