lets face it.
with gas/car payment/insurance its basically a mortgage payment a month to run a goddamn car.
does anyone think we will see a return to the 1 car households.
somethings got to give and it doesnt seem to me like its going to be the gas prices.

if everyone can get to work it wouldn't suprise me - that'd be my only limiting factor i'd say. otherwise it wouldn't bother me.

I don't think it can happen. Maybe fuel efficiant vehicle households...

If both a husband and wife work...it'd be hard with only one vehicle.

Sure, I think it is starting to happen now.

And this time, more and more men are being the stay-at-home dads.

we've just downgraded to a 1 car family (in the UK) but I'm lucky as train to work takes 10 minutes maximum since I started a new job. otherwise it would be difficult

not possible where we live/work

my old cars aren't worth enough to sell, so when we buy a new car, we'll be up to 4 cars/2 drivers

as long as we carry only liability on the old cars, insurance isn't that much

and i am trying to talk my wife into me getting a motorcycle again

Interesting idea. But I suspect that getting rid of a second car wouldn't save as much gas as you might think. You'd definitely be ahead from the standpoint of car payment/insurance, though.

Most of the families I know with two cars would do nearly the same amount of driving with one car. People still have to get to work, shop, take kids to soccer, etc.

I expect to see more emphasis on carpooling if the gas prices stay high.

For a lot of people, the gas prices don't mean squat and they won't conserve. I know a guy with four drivers in their home and they have four cars. They also have two boats, two ATVs, and a riding lawnmower. He's come right out and told me that he can afford to burn $100 in gas a day riding his boat around, and he has no plans to cut back.

we have 1 car because I drive my wife to the train station and I work from home. We used to have 2 even though it was the same scenario. ;) It actually cost us more in gas money to have 2 cars (even though we drove the Accord (vs. the SUV) more often for the train station-trips).

95% of the time my wife and I could get by just fine with one car... it helps that we work together. But it's the other 5% of the time that would cause so much hassle that it's not worth getting rid of one of the cars.

My parents are sharing a car right now, but they are looking to buy another one.

It also depends on what you are driving as well. Having two older cars is not nearly as expensive as having a single new car. Even after insurance is figured in.

Not in my area. What I could see happening is instead of two large cars, have one family car, and one commuter car. The Miata and Solstice are a couple of cars that would easily be used for a commuter car because they don't have the cheap image, are reletively economical, and not that expensive.

The two of us are stuck with THREE cars ATM. 2 gas guzzlers and 1 with acceptable MPG. Guess which 2 we're keeping

We have a single car, but it only works since my wife works at the same place as her mom and sister so they can carpool.

Other than getting to and from work, there haven't been that many occaisions where we actually needed more than one car.

If we had more than one kid it would almost be a necessity with all the activities and such.
