Hey, that's great news! Though it's not dominating, it's not lagging behind either, which is great for competition. $150 is about the most I'll pay for a video card, so the introduction of another competitive card at this price point is nice. :)

Like politics, there is only room for 2, republican v democrat. nvidia v ati. Throw in another and tell will not steal enough of the competition to stay in business.

Notice that out of the 3 true DX9 architectures available (nVidia, S3 & ATi) 2 of the 3 support FP16 while 1 does not.

Futuremark is going to have to patch 3DMARK03 to allow for partial precision (something that should have been in the benchmark from the start), since more DX9 architectures than not support it and can benefit from its use.

You forgot XGI, and they don't support fp16

i have doubts this will ever get to market, if it does, the drivers will be very bugy and slow. price of it will probably not justify it. plus s3 sucks, but i would love to see them prove me wrong

The Volari chipsets are a laughing stock.

Yeah but notice that 2 of the 3 support fp24 while one does not.... You have no point.

And to be true DX9 it has to have fp24. And that 3 cards out of 3 support fp24 or higher.

Diamond Multimedia is supposedly coming back; now S3. What next, will 3dfx be resurrected somehow?

Yeah, a beta card that can only match others performance, not going to help at all

More competition in a market it a bad thing

And another preview showed different results on performance, it seemed to have better performance.

I hope S3 has a very good driver team. The card seems pretty stable with current games (doesnt do so well in CoD yet). They've got the hardware down and its pretty powerful stuff. Now to get on working with drivers that can really benefit the card :D

Let's take your comments one at a time:-

1.Having talked to the various pr people from S3 and Club 3D I was told that products based on the deltachrome chipset have already been made so they will get to market.

2.As for buggy drivers, well when I first tested various geforce fx video cards shortly after launch I found nvidia's drivers to be quite poor and buggy. It wasn't until the recent v50 drivers that the geforce fx has really improved in performance, if people listened to you then the whole geforce fx range would of been a huge flop.

3.Your final comment "S3 sucks" shows more about yourself than S3.

4.No final price has been set for any of the Deltachrome video cards so commenting on cost is pointless.

To make any real headway, they will initially have to price the card below the competition while having the same performance. Otherwise, what is the incentive to switch? Later on, as they build a track record of producing stable, good performing cards, then they can start charging more. Until then, I am not going to hold my breath.

This isn't targeted at upgraders specifically, this is targeted at OEMs who want a cheaper solution to ATI and NVidia, while still offering comparable competetive gaming performance. I could see mid-range Dells outfitted with a DeltaChrome V8 and fitting the system pretty well.

beta is usually a good indicator of performance. this thing is below a 9600 pro, when the final version is released its not gonna jump to a 9800 pro
