As you can see, the only Hurricane system in 4P to beat the Opteron on the DL585 requires a $640k FiberChannel drive array...this really throws off the comparison as TPC is a highly transaction-based benchmark.
As to cost, an x-series 460 IBM with 2 Xeon 3.33 (single core) and 2GB DDR2 is about $20,000.
An HP DL585 with 2 (single core) 2.2 GHz Opterons and 2GB memory is ~$9,400.

The FC array hardly qualifies as to why it wins. It's just a test module, and you can put in a cheaper SCSI array and it'd probably do the same.

If that were true, I'm sure IBM would have submitted just such a configuration...as it is, their price/tpmc is more than double any of the competing Opteron server systems. If you look through all of the submitted servers, IBM hasn't submitted a single Hurricane-based server without FC. It's also quite telling that they aren't selling any either...

Don't get me wrong...Hurricane (X3) was a brilliant engineering feat! However, it's just not cost effective.
As to using it with Woodcrest, I would tend to doubt that they will be able to for at least another year (certainly not qualified before then...).
