Sorry if there's another thread out there on this, I didn't see one. Original Thread

Apparently Ling got to make a phone call, and had a "very specific message".

Link to article

The relevant portion:
Laura Ling "was very specific about the message she was communicating and she said, 'look, we violated North Korean law and we need our government to help us. We're sorry about everything that happened but now we need diplomacy," Lisa Ling told KOVR.

Wait. What? So you're admitting guilt for defying the laws of a foreign nation? I'm sorry... you don't need your government to help you... you're just like the rest of the greedy bastards in this nation looking for "a bailout". Do your time and shut up dumbass.

Now I think N. Korea is being pretty idiotic about most of the stuff they're doing. I'm also not convinced 100% that this phone call wasn't scripted by N. Korea either. But let's give it the benefit of the doubt here - IF she's actually admitting to committing a crime here, she doesn't need any help. If the US gets involved, then it's nothing more than the US doing the same thing they did in Iraq. We have more pressing issues to deal with over here other than two idiotic "reporters" that decided to walk too close to an imaginary line where an over zealous military regime is.

Do the crime, do the time. Being an American does not afford special diplomatic rights. They knowingly illegally entered North Korea, and were caught. North Korea is fully within their rights to imprison them.

Still, North Korea has pretty messed up laws. Sure, you'd better obey them but that doesn't mean they are good laws.

Dude. NORTH KOREA WANTS US to deal with them in a diplomatic fashion. They want us to send an envoy. That's IT. Of course it's a scripted mess. WTF, you want them to go to labor camp? Ugh. It's just like the American in Singapore who got caned for graffiti. Look some violations are bad, but these are slaps on the wrists. Punish them yes, but this is too much. I can't believe some of you are like "Tough, do the crime do the time." These are OUR citizens here. You can bring them back to the US and punish them here, 12 years of labor camp is detrimental to ANYONE.

North Korea doesn't even really want to hold these journalists. It's only using this situation as leverage to get the US to talk to them directly. This has nothing to do with punishing criminals.

And that's exactly why we should ignore them.

I like how people take what they say seriously when they are prisoners and could be told to say anything.

No, we should stay way from using human beings as bargaining chips but we should care for them on a humanitarian basis. They are US citizens.

US officials led by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have appealed to Pyongyang for clemency on humanitarian grounds and said the case should not be linked to the ongoing nuclear standoff.

You don't like the laws there, don't go there. If you choose to go, you better live by their rules regardless of your personal views of them. The US has plenty of stupid effing laws too but are you campaigning to let foreigners come in and violate them at will?

Uhhh it's not so much we should let foreigners go. The US has very humane laws compared to the rest of the world, especially in 3rd world countries. We aren't even sure EXACTLY what happened in North Korea. They were there to report on trafficking, not to spy on North Korea or blow shit up. Come on. What happens to illegal immigrants when they jump the border and get caught? They get stuffed in a van and driven back to Mexico where they try again. Yes why don't we send them to that labor camp so we dig a moat between the US and Mexico? Oh right even talks of not granting amnesty to illegal immigrants can draw up so much heat. Talk about the irony

Regardless of what they did, 12 years of labor is a freaking inhumane way to punish someone. They're US citizens and you should be just as concerned for their well being as anyone who's actually here in the states. I can't believe the responses I'm reading here. It's harsh and it's disgusting.

BTW don't mess up the quoting so I have to go and fix it myself....

Funny thing is this process doesn't happen over night. Often times these immigrants sit in a detention center for a few years before they are deported.

I agree... yes, look for more humane treatment - but I wouldn't be begging for release (assuming what she said is face value). I'd be looking to make sure they weren't being mistreated and were being provided the basic necessities on a daily basis. But nothing more.

How do you keep jumping to we do it this way = they should too? To YOU, 12 years labor is "freaking inhumane." However, that's the law of the land and they chose to try to work outside that law. If you knew that if you went to McDonalds more than once a year the government could chop off your balls/tits, would you do it? Now we don't have those types of laws here and that's a reason many people continue to live here but it doesn't give us any right to go to another country and violate their laws. They are prisoners and as such they are bound to the penance of their jailers now. Is it a shame, not really, they broke the friggen law. Were their intentions noble and great, perhaps, but what makes them noble and great is the risk involved in what they were trying to do and part of risk is penalty. As was stated earlier, can't do the time don't do the crime.

BTW, sorry I caused you a few extra keystokes fixing an honest mistake. I hope it didn't aggravate your carpel tunnel.

This is the measure of our nation.

We are weak. Our people are helpless in North Korea. We do not fight for them.

For most other nations, these girls would be out of there after the US Ambassador should up.

With NK; all three are making a statement.
The Girls trying to expose NK and daring them to do something
NK - to use the girls for propaganda and an attempt to leverage the US for buying the girls for additional aid.
US - Not allow what NK wants - NK is clamoring for attention, recognition and aid.

wth, law in NK is a joke.

You do realize that they were schooled on EVERYTHING they said on the phone before the call, right? And if they were to vary off that there would be repercussions? Why the fvck would you give benefit of the doubt to a country that has millions in labor camps where they die?

There are those that believe that if you turn the other cheek enough, the slapper will realize that you mean no harm.

NK has to act tough to deter SK from invading and taking over the country.

This ladies were abducted near the border between China and North Korea. The story from what I've read so far is that a "guide" in their crew set these ladies up to be captured near the Chinese side of the border between North Korea and China. They did not cross over. So the whole idea that they violated North Korean law by crossing over is a total lie made up by that regime to hold onto their captives to use as bargaining chips against the US. They did not violate North Korean law because they never entered North Korea to begin with at all. They were abducted near the border.

Edit: This isn't the first time North Korea has abducted people. Kim Jong II once order the abduction of a famous South Korean director and actress in the 1978. These two didn't see freedom until they escaped in 1986. There are also about 400+ cases of South Koreans being abducted by North Korean agents.

The whole situation somehow reminds me of this S. Korean Christian missionary who went to Iraq. The outcome? he was beheaded while crying for mercy and asking S. Korea to pull out troops from Iraq for his life.
I feel sorry for the man and wish he didn't end up dying like that but WTF was he thinking? I know he was a human being after all but he should've thought about what'd happen if he gets caught.
Too bad he ended up that way but he really asked for it. Those who don't care about their action and consequences of it should deal with the outcome.
