I like San Fransisco Faeries.

That's ok, right? The fairy is a respected mythological creature.

What about Green Bay sauerKrauts? I don't know....maybe that's a bit too far.

Here they come, them fightin' Krauts.

Frankly I think it's a little insensitive to name sports teams after animals that are now extinct in the area the team resides. UCLA Golden Bears and Detroit Tigers I'm looking at you.

What about the Wolverines?

I live in Michigan and the only time I've ever saw one was on the Discovery Channel!

Or the Fightin' Irish! Because as long as you don't use an epithet we can use racist stereotypes all we want!

Maybe I'm too young but Redskins sounds awesome to me. Warpainted warriors ready to kick some butt is how I picture that. I never got why colors are offensive. Hell they're not even accurate, white people aren't even white for example. Mostly pink lol. Ah well I don't really care and I don't think most people do.

The thing is that "beloved patriot" is a specific epithet. It is exactly like saying beautiful ray of sunshine or my excellent compatriot.
Names like "Chief" or "Brave," "Warrior," with an Indian logo were never used as epithets, and actually do connote the warrior image

How about this:

So the NFL expands with a new team in Hong Kong, called the HK Yellowskins. I'm sure that would work.

Unfortunately, most folks here are ignorant. One is a racial slur while the other terms are not.

Redskins ranks just about as offensive as Yanks.

If you can't get over that, perhaps you should enjoy some www.redman.com

Today, as in the bulk of 20th century, Yank is a very common term used primarily by British people to describe Americans.

I'm not familiar with anyone using the term beloved patriot to describe Indians/Native Americans--not in polite company, anyway.

The entire reason this bullshit is brought up is because someone believes their is a perceived intended slight, so Yank should follow the same dumbass PC prerogative to claim offense.

Well, Costas actually repeated several times that few, if any people see it as an intended slight.

Again, it's not very valid to compare it to Yank, as this term is used rather frequently.

I've been called a Yank many times; I'm not familiar with anyone that would directly refer to a Native American as a beloved patriot.

Would you? Granted, we, as WASPS, are rarely exposed to these tribes.

what does he know?

Rich white people have a problem with it. This outrage must be stopped!

I think he makes many fair points. But again, it's not really about intending to offend people with the name, today. They are "my team," and I don't regard myself as anti-Indian because I support that team. However, I can't separate this from history, whenever I look at the time. It's always there. Every other sports name that refers to Indians refers to a symbol that connotes pride--this one does not. It does directly refer to a specific term of insult. Whether it is seen as an "effective" insult, today, is not the issue.

It does show a real lack of consideration.

Those tribes that support the name, I doubt they would be put off if the name were changed to something more prideful that still reflected their heritage, which seems to be a recurring source of support.

 Behind what?

How many times have you been on to the reservation and interacted with Native Americans? In the Casino's maybe?

It's a real question--would you directly call one a beloved patriot?

Further, do you think your chances of encountering a British person are greater than encountering a Native American? I know this reflects local demographics for some, but it is worth considering in that comparison.
