the cheap "high power" brand batteries on my logitech mx 700 died today so I'm wondering what kind of batteries I can use to replace them and still use the charger.... the batteries are rated at 1.2V and 1700mAh so do I have to find batteries with the same specs or can I just stick in some 1.5V and 2000mAh batteries? or should I just buy some recharables and ditch the charging station?

Thanks,

Rig

Thats weird that they just died like that. I have 1850 mah batteries in mine and they work great with the recharger and mouse, however they are also 1.2 volt batteries. So I would say that you should probably use batteries that have the same voltage.

I use various brands and sizes of NiMH in my MX700 and have never once had a problem with either the charger or the mouse itself.
I sometimes forget to put the mouse on the charger and it always seems to run out at a bad time ... ie in the middle of a game. SO I just put two more NiMH batteries from my normal battery charger in there and it works great. Untill the next time I forget to charge my mouse and the cycle starts a new! ;) I also found that when I put more powerful batteries in there it lasted even longer between charges...So I would through the most powerfull battery you can find in there myself. :)

From the Logitech website under the MX700 FAQ...

About Batteries and Recharging
Q: What type of batteries should I use in the MX700 rechargeable mouse?
A: The MX700 ships with two AA nickel metal hydride (NiMH) 1700 mAh batteries. If you need to replace them, use only rechargeable NiMH batteries rated between 1500 and 1900 mAh.

Q: Can I use other types of rechargeable batteries to power and charge the mouse?
A: Yes, but only just to power the mouse, not charge it. Warning: Do not try to recharge any other type but the specified ones! This means that the mouse must never be put on the Rapid Charge Base Station while equipped with any batteries other than a NiMH batteries. Attempting to recharging any other type of battery will damage your mouse. We strongly recommend that you disconnect the AC power adapter to prevent accidentally recharging the mouse when putting it on the Rapid Charge Base Station by mistake. If you have rechargeable batteries such as NiCad, charge them in their own charger, not the mouse Rapid Charge Base Station.

Although you can use other batteries to power the mouse, we do not recommend it because of the following:

The battery status indicators may be wrong.
Other batteries will not last as long because this mouse uses more power than other cordless mice.

Q: What kind of battery life can I expect?
A: Under normal usage, the NiMH batteries should last until end of the product's life. A new set of batteries should last for about 300 to 500 charge/discharge cycles before you experience a noticeable reduction of cycle time.

Q: Why is the battery cycle time much shorter than previous optical mice using alkaline batteries?
A: In order to get the maximum tracking performance, the MX700 uses more battery power than other Logitech cordless mice. This is why it uses rechargeable NiMH batteries.

Q: Should I remove the batteries from the mouse if I don't plan to use the mouse for a long period of time?
A: No. As long as you make sure the AC power adapter is connected to the Rapid Charge Base Station, the mouse can stay in it with the batteries in. Leaving the mouse in the Rapid Charge Base Station without the AC power adapter connected may affect the battery life or the batteries could leak and cause damage to the mouse.

Q: Where can I buy additional or replacement batteries?
A: You can buy batteries at most retail electronics and photography shops. Just make sure to buy the correct type and size of NiMH batteries.

AA size
Any rated capacity from 1500 mAh to 1900 mAh. (Other types or capacities are not compatible.)
Both cells must be identical and should ideally come from the same set (e.g. from the same 2- or 4-cell package).
If you buy additional batteries, they do not need to be charged in an external charger. Also, both batteries should have the same battery level when you put them in the mouse. For example, do not use a fully charged battery along side an partially charged one. Please note that Logitech does not sell separate batteries.

Q: How long should the mouse take to reach a full charge?
A: After a complete discharge, the mouse will take four to six and a half hours to reach a full charge. Charging the mouse for 15 minutes gives the mouse enough power to operate for one day of standard use. We recommend you fully charge the mouse as often as possible.

Q: How long should a full charge last?
A: On average, a full charge should last about ten days for a standard office user. Some "heavy" users might need to recharge the mouse more often. Low cycle times (one to three days before the unit has to be recharged) may indicate that the mouse never powers down as it is designed to do during inactivity periods. To test this, observe the cursor behavior on the screen while the mouse is resting at your work surface. A jittery (rapidly moves back and forth) cursor indicates the mouse has not powered off for the inactivity period. Try using the mouse on a different surface.

Low cycle times can occur if you use a different brand NiMH battery instead of the brand originally provided with your mouse. Also, if batteries were stored for a long period of time before you use them, it may take two or three cycles of discharging and recharging to reach their optimal capacity. Another possible reason for low cycle times is that your batteries are simply getting low and should be replaced.

Q: Why isn't my mouse fully charged after being in the Rapid Charge Base Station for a long time?
A: In certain situations, keeping the mouse in the Rapid Charge Base Station for extended periods of time may cause the mouse to start losing its charge. Simply remove it from the Rapid Charge Base Station, then put it back to finish charging.

Q: Will letting the batteries completely discharge from time to time achieve a longer total battery life?
A: No, NiMH batteries do not have a memory effect like batteries with older technology such as NiCad.

Q: Is there a way I can extend the time I can use the mouse before I need to recharge it?
A: Yes. Using your MX700 on a light surface, such as a white piece of paper or light colored mousepad, will reduce the power consumption. This can also improve tracking performance.

Q: Do I have to have my computer on to charge the mouse?
A: No, simply plugging the AC power adapter into a common household outlet and placing the mouse in the Rapid Charge Base Station will charge it.

Q: Is it dangerous to leave the mouse on Rapid Charge Base Station after the mouse is finished charging?
A: No. The base station will detect when the mouse is fully charged and conserve the battery level without over-charging them. Just make sure the AC power adapter is plugged in for the time the mouse remains on the Rapid Charge Base Station. Otherwise the batteries will discharge again.

Q: Can I take the mouse off of the Rapid Charge Base Station before it's finished charging?
A: Yes, but taking the mouse off the Rapid Charge Base Station before it reaches a full charge means the mouse will work for a shorter period before it needs to be recharged again.

Q: Is it true that if I don't complete a full charge of the batteries, I might damage them or shorten their total life?
A: No, you won't damage the batteries or the mouse with a partial recharge. However, the less time the mouse spends charging in the Rapid Charge Base Station means the less time you can use it before it needs to be recharged again.

Q: Should I put the mouse on the Rapid Charge Base Station after I'm done using it? How long should I recharge it? Is there an optimal period for recharge?
A: You don't have to put the mouse on the Rapid Charge Base Station after each time you're finished using it. However, we suggest you recharge it when you intend to leave your computer for a longer period of time, such as the end of the day or a extra long meeting.

Q: Why does the mouse discharge faster when I put it in the Rapid Charge Base Station with the AC power adapter disconnected?
A: When the mouse is put in the Rapid Charge Base Station without the AC power adapter connected, it remains on and does not enter its power saving mode. If you want to disconnect the AC power adapter for a period of time, remove the mouse from the Rapid Charge Base Station. If you have the AC power adapter connected to a power strip that you switch off each night, make sure you remove the mouse from the Rapid Charge Base Station or plug the AC power adapter directly into an electrical outlet so it's powered.

Q: Will the Rapid Charge Base Station work if the AC power adapter is not connected?
A: Yes. Without the AC power adapter connected, the Rapid Charge Base Station will still function as a RF receiver and the mouse will still function. The only difference is that the mouse will not switch off and will not charge when placed on the Rapid Charge Base Station. Therefore, we recommend NOT putting the mouse on the Rapid Charge Base Station while it is not powered by the AC power adapter.

Q: Can I use another AC power adapter or do I need to use the Logitech AC power adapter?
A: You should use only the AC power adapter that comes with your MX700 mouse since it was specifically designed to work with the mouse. Please contact Logitech Sales in you need to obtain another AC power adapter.

NiMH's or NiCD's they both are 1.2v cells just nimh doesn't have memory problems and safer for the enviroment. Nicds put out better amperage than nimh. Which is why the NiMh's have larger Mah ratings. Takes them longer to discharge
Nicds are usually cheaper and if the charger charges NiMhs then it can also charge NiCd.

don't worry, i read the manual, it says to use NiMH AA with a rating of no more than 1900mAH
