Zing! The real truth about rebates. I never buy hardware based off the rebate price now, because from my personal experience it's a 50/50 chance that I'll ever get the money promised. They always assume that four-five months down the road (how long it takes to authorize rebates) you'll forget you ever sent it in.

I have received every rebate I have ever applied for. In over 40 rebates, I have had two problems. One was with Kingston which was resolved by one phone call. The second was with Gigabyte which was a lot of work to get. I ended up making a post over at Hardforum and contacting the CA attorney general about it (and making about 10 phone calls and several emails). It was for $10 but in the end (took almost 5 months instead of the 10~12 weeks promised) I ended up getting $20 instead of $10 plus a $50 Visa gift card, a $25 California Pizza Kitchen gift card and various promo swag (beanies and pens and such).

If you let them take advantage of you, just like many people, they will. First, I only deal with companies that I think are likely to pay. Keep copies (scans) of all submitted material. As for "forgetting" about your rebates, just make a folder called Rebates on your computer and stick everything in there.

Some people on Hardforum were saying it was a waste of my time (to attempt to get my money). I think it was worth it. I asked to get a Visa gift card or a CPK gift card (on top of my rebate) for wasting my time. I was vocal about and got both. Their CS rep contacted Kyle to get my email and they got some person to go on Hardforum to address the issue. I believe a few other people had their problems resolved because of that thread also.

For those of you that just give up on a rebate, that is what they are hoping for. It should only take a small amount of work (like one phone call) to straighten everything out if there is a problem. Even if you didn't keep copies you could claim that you did and I would think that most rebate processors would just OK it instead of going through the extra work of trying to verify it (Kingston did to me when I complained). If there are bigger problems you could post on a heavily trafficked computer forum to get attention. I chose H's motherboard section cause I thought it would cost them sales (which it did appear to do, yet Gigabyte didn't seem to care about it (I informed them of the thread when I made it) until I contacted the CA attorney general). I would have taken them to small claims court if it came down to it and I would have won and been reimbursed for the filing fee, the process serving, my missed time from work and anything else I could justify.

Some of these companies are shady but if you stand up for yourself, I think it would be less hassle to just pay the person complaining because there are so many "sheep" just will to take it in the A

Most people go to work, then come home and relax. I would fight for every one of those rebates I didn't get...if I didn't have a job. Generally I'd rather spend time enjoying the hardware I bought then raising my blood pressure to wring $10 from some rep whose job description is to stop you from getting your rebate, give him a hard time and get in trouble with his boss, escalate it to him, and maybe get a call back in 48 hours...

just my 2 cents.

I've only been denied 2 rebates out of maybe 10 or so. I'd say that's pretty good odds. One was from OCZ (big surprise eh?). The other was from a 128mb USB stick I bought when they first came out. It was from CompUSA and they said I didn't submit the proper form. I was like 18 years old or something and really didn't care at all. The OCZ one I should have followed up on, but just didn't have the time. I read in some forums and on the Newegg reviews that hundreds of people were having the same issue and OCZ was resolving it, so that was my fault and not theirs in the end.

yeah I had a $30 rebate from OCz that I ended up not getting even tho I'm pretty sure I sent in all the right stuff. On the plus side tho I somehow damaged my first USB 16GB stick during a format from FAT32 to NTFS but managed to get them to replace it by telling the rep "it just stopped working" (technically true, though I might have had something to do with it). Overall I'd say OCz customer service is pretty good, even if the rebate office hasn't been up to scratch.

Good for you standing up for what is right. But YIKES! Not a very good promo for buying a product based upon the "final price" AR. Who needs this grief?

I hate rebates, and generally I don't buy a product with a rebate anymore if it means I have to kick down an extra $10-$20 or so. I got screwed on my Alltel phone rebate, they said I didn't send in the upc but I did. Of course I didn't have another one to hack off of the box. I called and complained and got some satisfaction, but the thing is still pending and that's been before Christmas.

Seriously, I have taken to videoing myself showing all the documents and enclosing them in the envelope etc. It takes an extra few minutes, and I can youtube the video if they say I didn't enclose something. I hope to never use that tactic though.

Don't buy products with rebates...

Or if you do, always assume you won't get them back.

I've personally had very good luck with rebates, but i still hate them, & avoid them if at all possible.

I'm going to get burned for my rebate practices someday...I sent in my Alltel rebate ($100) three days late and still got it, a BFG rebate was turned around in four weeks when I submitted my forms on the last possible day, and none of them had copies or whatever. Definitely going to straighten that out next time I do a rebate (long time...I dodge rebates when possible).

I got every rebate I was entitled to. Cut the UPC code from the box, fill out your address on the rebate form, don't throw away your receipt. Put those 3 items into envelope and mail to indicated address. Not that hard. But then most people are pretty dumb and can't follow basic directions.

I guess if you already have all the equipment setup, and it only takes a few minutes...

I just tape the UPC to the rebate form and scan the rebate form/UPC

I'm about 9/10. The only rebate I never got was a $10 from MSI. I called them a couple times, got bounced around. Promised a rebate, but it never showed. I resolved to just sent a hate email to them, detailing how I felt it was wrong to do this to a long time loyal customer and how I will never buy or endorse their products again. So far, that's what I've done...I never received a reply, so apparently they don't give a shit!

edit: the comic strip made me lol
