"The reason that they don't care about sweet foods is because they can't taste them. Sweet taste is meaningless to them."
I have always thought about why cats dislike sweets, I guess maybe we can use this research to result in a slimmer hybrid population, hmm not bad of an idea :p

One of my cats likes yogurt and ice cream. The others couldn't care less.

I think it's just the yogurt part that makes it eat it, other than that the ice cream is just a cold filler.

Maybe its because your cat likes the texture and/or temperature of yogurt and ice cream.

This article really surprised me, I thought cats just disliked sweets I never thought it's impossible for them to taste the stuff.

Cats do like dairy products. However, after a certain age they don't eat very much in one sitting, as I believe they become lactose intolerant (like most mammals).

What ? I never heared of that, when I used to have a cat, it loved yogurt , cheese and whatever dairy product you can throw at it, even at old age.

I don't know how much dairy your cat would consume in one sitting, but he may have been dealing with some harsh side effects as a result of satisfying his sweet tooth (edit: sweet tooth for... dairy).

Why do they classify it as a "defect" in a gene? Is something actually wrong with the gene, or is it just different than the average coding of a mammal?

Maybe they are looking at it from an evoloutionary point of view, as we know all creatures have their genes mutated through time due to many enviromental changes, even humans.

A mutation doesn't necessarily mean a bad thing but it means a change, so maybe the ancestors of some cats used to be able to taste sweets but not anymore after cats evolved to what they are now.
