The reason the Gran Turismo series was made...

Okay, I actually watched the video now. 😀

What this has to do with Gran Turismo is beyond me...espcially since Gran Turismo has been around for many years before the GT-R was even conceived.

In Japan, when the term "GT-R" is used, it refers to all generations of the GT-R, including the R32,33,34 and even the ones before that. Yamauchi likely meant that the R32 inspired him to create Gran Turismo, since that was the generation that gave the GT-R name such a cult following.

you sure you watched the video?

subtitles in the first min of the video:
Kazunori Yamauchi, Gran Turismo Series Producer - "The GT-R is a really special car for me. When the GT-R was first developed in Japan, and its speed was attracting the world's attention, was also when I was inspired to make Gran Turismo. I think it's fair to say that without the GT-R, Gran Turismo may have never existed."

the GT-R has existed for quite a while now. Not the current version, but there was the R32 GTR, R33 GTR, and the R34 GTR

here is a bit of history about the Skyline GTR

edit: 996GT2 beat me to it
