The reason people modify civics....

notfred

It's cause it's fun. Same reason people modify computer cases and V8 muscle cars. It's a hobby, people do it to be part of a group and to have fun.

You all know that I'm not a big import fan, but I do know that they have the same motivation for working on thier cars that I have for working on my car. It passes time, it's fun, and it makes the car owner part of a socail group that he/she enjoys.

Maybe a lot of people think the cars are ugly, but that's not the point. Anyway, rivalry between people modifying different types of cars just makes track days more fun. Would the performance parts market for american smallblocks be the same without the chevy/ford rivalry? I doubt it.

Notfred, I agree with you 100%
all the civic/import/"rice" bashing on the boards lately is just ridiculous. new cars or old, car tuning is here to stay!!!

well unfortunately for some, some people's taste is far different than others.
i have a new car i am working on doing up, and i'd like to own an old car as well. thankfully i like almost any type of car out there. i have a fairly open mind when it comes to cars/tuning and the hobby in general.

I'm not saying that I'd buy a civic to mod it, or that I wouldn't laugh at a ridiculous looking car with primer gray ground effects and an aluminum wing. I'm not even saying I think a civic is a good choice of car to make into a drag car. I'm just saying that I know why they do it, and if you actually think about it, you'll realize that my answer makes sense. They don't do it cause they're dumb, or cause they watched too many movies, they do it as a hobby.

As long as they don't claim their car to be fast, they can do whatever they want to it (in the privacy of their own garage of course).

but of course they do.
that's why the rice bashing is getting old.. IMO.

It was funny the first time. After the 3347593457th time seeing it at every message board possible, it's not funny in the least. Beating a dead horse is lame and these people just don't get it.

sweet.. that is how i see it too.
like i said.. the guys into the muscle cars and stuff. taht's COOL with me.. also doing up new cars is COOL. whatever floats your boat! that's why we have different companies, car classes, etc. it's a personal preference but people dont seem to care, if it's a done up civic it's automatic crap... so not true.

And because they're young and have nothing better to do with their money 😛

Yep. Pretty much. That's what I did with my $$$ in high school and undergrad. Just like what the guys in the late 60s did in high school and undergrad (those cars were GREAT drag cars, but were "door-handle" cars--if you turned hard, you scraped your door-handles on the curb).

Of course, I'm very much a function over form kinda guy.... so when I was working on my Civic (back in '95-'97), I was doing internal mods. And the reason I chose a Civic? Well, this was before "The Fast and the Furious"... it was mainly because I could buy a hard-used '92 Civic hatchback (that weighed around 2100 lbs), drop pretty much all the moving parts, and bolt-in a much higher-performing engine (relatively speaking) and NICE wheels, springs and shocks. At finish, I was putting out 200 front wheel HP (through a limited slip), and (more importantly) could turn 1.05G on a skidpad. And it was just FUN. Fast corners, at least to me, are FAR more fun than a drag car. Of course, I seldom drove mine on the street.... and I had less than $10K in it. And it had the originial white paint, no stickers, no wings, no nothing.

I got out of it because 1) it was too expensive for me after awhile--I couldn't make any more improvements without REALLY spending $$$, and 2) I really got tired of the form-over-function "Honda-boy" image. But for those who do it, and like it--more power to you.... its just like the kids in the 50s and 60s--now just with people doing it with the cars they can afford (do a cost-of-living analysis from '69 to 2003... and look at the prices of cars. My dad had a Z28 when he turned 16... but that was HARDLY affordable today).

I am sorry, but I have to disagree with ya. modding a civic is one thing. Ricing it is another. That stupid movie put too many posers on the street trying to be cool with looks alone.

Neon = evil. 2' tall wings = evil.

Those get added, it is no longer a hobby. it is trying to be "cool". and failing.

Those wings and neon were around before the movie. That's where the people making the movie got the idea. Many hobbies involve trying to look cool. Take basketball or break dancing as examples.

No, the "rice" scene has been around a lot longer than that movie has been out. I remember seeing it on opening day, and all the civics and other "ricey" cars were trying to peel out and stuff after the movie.

BTW anyone see the newest trailer for FatF2? Where the Mustang gets run over by the truck. I was like OMG, then the Vet hits the stang.

I know, but the movie focused attention on them. I was basicly trying to say you and I kinda agree, but you do not have it broken down.

There are ricers that add big ass fugly wings, fart pipes, neon and stickers to their cars. Then there are the people who add a turbo, go engine mods, swap entire engines, and add N2O. these are 2 different classes IMHO. ATOT has them lumped together unfairly.

Failing, perhaps, in your eyes. There's a community that loves tall wings and neons.

Though, I'll keep your comments in mind next time I see a 70's beater driving down the street with racing slicks that are useless in any wet condition and a intake sticking out of the hood that obscures the driver's vision.
