The conclusion is that ATi's hierarchicalZ doesn't work properly with Z-Pass and stencil-shadow operations. The R420 has much more to do because the HSR-features cannot remove hidden pixels very effective. And the same thing will propably happen with the Unreal 3 engine.

The x800 XT PE runs Doom 3 great if you get the 4.9 beta drivers. I first played the game with the 4.7 drivers and it was a little choppy. The image quality wasn't that impressive either. The I got the 4.9 beta drivers, and it runs and looks great now. It runs as smoothly as Far Cry.

The 6800 Ultra is still probably a little better. But, the framerate is capped at 60 FPS, so at 1024x768 thes cards probbaly run the game equally.

is he saying a x800 non pro (if he has one, did not think they existed) is faster than the 6800 ultra? sorta like nvidia saying a 6800 is faster than a x800pro in the game?
