I've been doing some initial searching on the web re:aspartame. There's the case of Diane Fleming who was indicted in the poisoning death of her husband:

But yet there are signs that aspartame is not toxic:

Is it (aspartame) a deadly neurotoxin? I know if I drink several Diet Cokes in a day, I'll feel some tightness in my chest and once in a while get those skipped heartbeat feelings. I've really tried to cut down on the diet drinks and am drinking more water. But, could it be the caffeine, too?

I switched to diet soft drinks to lose weight, then I read up on Aspartame and abandoned them.

Stevia or Splenda now.

Stevia is great. It's funny how the FDA refuses to classify it as a "sweetener" though, in tribute to the artificial sweetener industry which cannot patent a natural herb like stevia. Despite the fact that stevia is approx. 300x more potent than sugar and has no calories. Instead stevie continues to be classified simply as a herbal supplement.

I use it in my coffee everday- half a smidgen of stevia per cup. But like everything out there, you need to give it a few days to get an acquired taste to it, as it will taste a bit strange at first but by a week you can't believe it's not sugar.

Diet soft drinks do help you lose weight. The phosphorous erodes the calcium in your bones.
Why don't you just drink water the all natural diet drink?

Because water doesn't please the taste buds unless you purge yourself of sweeteners for a long time. I remember when I used to drink soft drinks profusely and water tasted absolutely disgusting- I was never able to understand how people would deliberately drink it.

filtered water is good. i drink diet cola when i drink cola..but i don't do that often anymore. used to drink a lotta soda, i've stopped, it was a waste of calories. now i can' tstand the taste of sugar soda thanks to diet soda:p sugar soda is like drinking syrup.

that being said, if diet soda was harmful, the lawsuits would never end... talk about a fat cash cow for lawyers...

its no good anyways, from what i remember it triggers ur hunger response or increases it:p just like how reg soda does

Water with lemon is fine with me.
It's funny. At work we have a soda fountain where you can get minute maid lemonade that contains 0% fruit juice for a buck something, or you can take the lemons and squeeze them into a cup and fill it up with water or even carbonated water, and that is free.
I guess people never heard of "If life gives you lemons, make lemonade" :D
