The reason "24" seemed dull to so many (first season SPOILER)

Fans of the first season have been raving about "24" all year, and for good reason...it's a brilliant show. The fact, however, is that the great show slipped at the end of the first season. It degenerated into languid plot explanaions and a hack ending meant only to shock us. I forgive it easily for that because the first 75% of the season was unpredictable and filled with action and drama.

The first episode this season was very slow in comparison to ANY of the shows last season. The last 5 minutes was back to the old "24" and will hopefully be a sign of things to come.

For those who didn't see the first episode of last season it included misdirection, sex in a plane bathroom, a plane explosion, parachuting, lesbian kissing, sniping, car chases, Bauer knocking out Mason, more sex, kidnapping, extortion, and finger chopping. It was a frantic 60 minutes full of twists, surprises, and action and it instantly endeared everyone who saw it to the show. The rest of the season matched that pace with a few exceptions.

Anyway, the reason the show seemed slow is because it was. The reason it was slow was probably to get the first time viewers up to speed with the state of the main characters. I haven't seen the first episode since it aired, so my recounting may be off a bit.

The last part of season 1 was also tacked on later, because they weren't sure if they were going to be picked up for a whole season, so if they weren't, the episode that ended with Jack and his family reunited and flying away in a chopper was the "end". But when they got picked up, they had to come up with more eps quickly, so they didn't fit as nicely. I bet this season will gel a lot more solidly since they know they're going to be around all season and can plan appropriately.

That being said, I loved the second season premier. Nothing wrong with seeing Kim in her underwear, either. ;)

Well, I never saw any of season 1, but the first episode of season 2 was 30 seconds of torture followed by 50 minutes of fishing, family reunions, wedding plans, and a little girl skateboarding at 3mph on a sidewalk. Then in the last 5 minutes they threw in a criminal getting shot for no reason and some spousal abuse.

That's the point, though. They need to show what has happened to people since last season, where they are in their lives and how they were affected by the actions of last season. That's why Kim has moved out and will not see her father; why Mason is now in Jack's office and Tony is closer to Jack than he was last year. Why Jack is living like a bum and avoiding just about everyone except for the President (whose life he saved and they bonded during last season). Why the President IS the President and why his wife isn't with him. And all the other stuff will be explained eventually. But you're already way behind if you didn't see the first season.

The President also allowed the media to think he was dead to save Jack's daughter and possibly lose the election because of it, so Jack probably owes him more than he owes Jack. Not to mention that everytime jack saved the President's life it was because jack put him in danger in the first place. :)

So the network is going to keep running a show that will never get any new viewers?

Uh? WTF are you talking about? Just because YOU didn't like it, you extrapolate that to them getting NO new viewers? Sure thing. It's like any GOOD show, where characters develop over time; some newer viewers miss out on some of the subtlety and reasons for actions, but can mainly get the gist of the show.

I didn't read a word you said, I just wanted to come in here and thank people for torturing me with these 24 threads before I get a chance to watch my tape of it.

I also like how everyone keeps calling it dull or whatever, that's really getting my hopes up...

Then how come I keep hearing "the reason you don't get it is because you didn't watch the first season" and "It makes a lot more sense after you've seen the first season"?

If it's required to see all the previous episodes for the current episode to be interesting or even make sense, then the show wont get any new viewers.

It's not REQUIRED. You can grasp things without watching all the previous episodes, it's just easier if you have seen them.

I didn't watch a single episode on TV last season, and plan to watch every episode this season.
