The Real Story on Vista Delay

OK so according to Paul Thurrot Vista was not actually delayed. What happened was it's getting released in October and that is too late for the *lazy* hardware manufacturers to ensure a "great out of box experience", which Microsoft wants them to be able to do. Hence the consumer delay. However, Vista is still on track for October release, apparrently:

The other item I just came across was that a code complete limited-release build is coming with the "real" Aero Glass. Apparrently what we have seen so far is Aero Express with Transparency, which is not the same thing as Aero Glass non-Express - the ultra pretty version nobody has seen yet. Other interesting details as well:

So assuming these two sources are correct, I think we have reason to be excited about Vista because it (a) will be available for real this year and (b) is going to have some cool graphical surprises - hopefully.

That's just Paul Thurrot parroting Microsoft's press release on the issue. This has already been covered very well in the other 'vista delayed' thread.

Oh, I see, I should be excited over a new operating system because of graphical improvements eh? Wow, people are stupider (yes this is a word) than I thought... The point of an OS is to help your applications you run, not some graphical glass crap that just sucks your computer to death, bring it to a crawl then a complete hault. Maybe if the OS had some real improvements I could see the excitement, there is seriously nothing I see that will be of benefit to current XP users.. You're probably the person who has the "XP theme" desktop with the crayola crap.

and the point of a car is to get from point A to B...and how much is spent on newer, faster, sleaker cars when our old ones "function" just fine?

Cars aren't generally faster now, they just are loaded with more crap... Which is why I don't purchase a new car every 3 years..

As has been mentioned about a hundred times thusfar Vista is about much more than a new GUI. Vista has new features that will expose new potential to application developers, we wont see many of the advantages to Vista until the ISVs build new software to take advantage of it.

You just see a lot of people commenting about it now because all they have access to is screenies.

As I've said before unless you are an expert on a topic please try and keep your speculation to a minimum.

I am so happy we have you to tell us all how to think!!

RTM != release.

What that means, is Dell is going to get their master installer version of Vista in October. Then, they have to crappify that into their system image for each product they sell by installing 3 copies of AOL and MusicMatch Jukebox SuperSpyWareEdition++. After running fragment.exe twice on the HD, then it's ready to ship.

Or, they need to collect applications and drivers that are Vista compatible and prepare a system image for mass duplication. It's one of the two, I just can never remember which. 🙂

Hilariously funny, but sadly true.

Thanks for letting us know that you haven't really bothered to read or learn a thing about what features Vista has. We'll understand now when you politely STFU. 🙂 Thanks!

Oh, and btw the bloated eye version will run faster than the non-eye candy version since it's offloading real work to your GPU, and not just a bitmap.

It won't make much difference WHEN Vista is released. It's been long-apparent that software and hardware vendors don't start writing and testing their software until AFTER a new Microsoft OS has been released.

If Vista is released in October, there will be working drivers and software in March.
If Vista is released in March, there will be working drivers and software in September.

Yep...I remember the joys of trying to run a Windows 2000 system right after it was released...I had at least a few missing drivers (it was worth it though for the stability 😛). Hell, XP Pro x64 has been out for almost a year now and there are still tons of devices that don't have drivers for it (and may never)...

Yeah it was the worst when 2000 was released (prior to the compatability updates). I didnt have too many problems with drivers, but getting some of my software from 9x running was a PITA.

I can believe the party line. Just installed the latest CTP release. I was missing 2 mass storage drivers (ICH5R, Promise 378), Audigy 2 ZS drivers, Wacom drivers, and need to DL the latest ATI drivers. I can't test any of my major apps on Vista yet.

You don't know anything about Windows Vista and the changes it has made to the kernel and core systems do you? How about you go read up on the stability, driver, and software to kernel level changes, because those are far more plentiful than the graphical improvements. Even the graphical improvements would run FASTER than what we have today, because the graphics card is taking care of more instead of sitting there idle. I guess better functionality, stability and performance is too crappy for you... stick with what you have then.

ATI doesnt have 5342 drivers on their site yet, the built-in ones have worked fine thusfar for me.
