Obese online gamer dies playing
By Wu Yong (China Daily)
Updated: 2007-02-28 07:14

SHENYANG: An obese young man from Northeast China's Liaoning Province has died after a marathon video games session playing the popular online game "World of Warcraft."

The 26-year-old man, surnamed Zhang from Jinzhou, collapsed on February 24, the last day of the week-long Spring Festival holiday, after hours of non-stop online gaming.

A doctor from the Liaoning Medical College blamed "overwork and obesity" as the cause of Zhang's death.

An Internet addict, Zhang spent almost all his time playing online games during the seven-day holiday instead of sleeping and visiting relatives, his parents said.

Moreover, he weighed almost 150 kilograms, and his heart struggled to pump blood throughout his enormous body.

Zhang's story has shocked the local community.

"I am a little scared after reading the story of Zhang, because I did almost the same thing like him," said Wang Rui, a young photographer from an advertising company in Shenyang.

"I also played games for such a long time that I could hardly find time to sleep during the holiday.

"Now, I just can't drag my mind back to normal and feel rather tired."

Meng Xianyun, a doctor from China Medical University, said symptoms such as tiredness and the inability to concentrate properly were caused by "irregular lifestyle" excessive food and drinking and a lack of exercise during the holiday period.

"That's all fine for the festival, but do not ignore your health, especially those old and young people," Meng said.

Xu Yan, a female middle school teacher complained the "dull life" during the festival prompted many people to turn to computer games for entertainment.

"There are only two options: TV or computer. What else can I do in the holiday as all markets, KTV and cafeterias are shut down?" Xu said.

Liu Jie, an expert from local Shenyang Cultural and History Research Institute, urged the local government organize more "traditional activities" to entertain people during the festival

I'm still torn over WOW, I have friends telling me to stay far away from it and some telling me to get into it. I think I might just quit gaming all together and really get into my band a lot more, I already sold my 8800GTS. This story is pretty sad though.
edit: That's weird, he has the same name as the main character in my novel.

Sadly, this story is common. I haven't played a MMORPG in 2 years. Thank god. But I did pre-order Lord of The Rings Online. I don't think I will get addicted to that game though, probably good for about 10 hours a week.

The worse story has to be the one where the couples let their baby die while playing WoW

I'm telling you, WOW can be like a drug hence the nickname "world of warcrack". People do get addicted and people do die.

Some of the stuff these MMORPG players are crazy. Whoring yourself so you can have money to play WoW??? WTF!!!

"One problem with those games is that you build your online persona through countless hours of battles, and you develop a huge emotional attachment to your game character," said Chang Woo Min, a onetime online gamer who is now a counselor at the government-run Center for Internet Addiction Prevention and Counseling.

Chang cited reports of youngsters who traced the players who killed their characters and attacked them physically, or girls who resorted to prostitution for game-playing money."

If WoW is this bad, imagine the day when we may truly have immersive-virtual reality type gaming devices. People will be dying by the thousands every day.

After remembering how much Diablo 2 I played back in the day, I'm glad I resisted playing WOW.

I am also glad that I cannot play games for more than an hour at a time without getting completely bored. TBH when I am at school I don't play games, the only times I play computer games now are over christmas and thanksgiving breaks where I have to be in my parents house, and they onyl have 56k, so its old school TFC :p.

I really do feel sorry for people like this though, it can be a viscious cycle, you are a loner without many friends, and so you go online to play games and be accepted, but then you just have less time to gain friends, and become less attractive since you aren't excersizing any which just makes it less likes you will get a girlfriend, or have a social life, so you end up just spening even MORE time playing games, or being depressed. It can actually be a viscious cycle just like drugs can. I'm not saying its the games fault, people need to be responsible for their own actions, but at the same time I can understand how it can be alot easier to just get sucked into video games than trying to live in the real world.

Good riddance.... if you have nothing better to do than breathe our air, use our electricity, and eat our food (to the tune of 150kg), only to sustain your video game addiction, good riddance. This planet needs a serious dose of chlorine in the gene pool. I'm an avid gamer myself, but i still work full time and workout 4 days/week. People like this are the ones that sabretooth tigers used to pick off to keep the rest of us strong... thin our heard i tell ya!!

I just don't get it. I guess I don't have an addictive personality. I drink beer on the weekends, and have binge drank for years. yet I can go a month or two without alcohol easily. I've played Diablo II for a few years a while back, and I play Eve-Online now but i've never been addicted to them. Sure i've had days where I play eve for 5 hours straight, but on avg I play a couple hours a week. I just don't get how people can become so engulfed in these games. Sounds like Darwin at work to me.

GOOD GAWD!
Read a fvcking book people! Sit in the park and feed pidgeons. Take a walk with your dog. Make love to your girl or someones girl.

Now chronic masturbators look like health nuts.

I would ask how much 150 kilos is, but I'm sure at least one asshole would say "Enough to mess up Sam Kinison real good baby!".

EDIT: DAMN :Q! 330 pounds. Thats pretty good for a chinese fella.

Edit: Fixed up the gibberish that was that paragraph.

Never played WoW (or any other MMORPG), but I did spend countless hours playing CS in college/law school. Even now that I'm working, I'll still fire it up on a Saturday morning, and sit and play for a couple hours like a zombie.
