The difference between Apple and Microsoft:

Microsoft: releases a service pack and says it is revolutionary, but all it does is fix bugs and vulnerabilities, fixes whatever the Dept Of Justice tells them to, and covers their butts. (for free)

Apple: Charges $129 to fix bugs and vulnerabilites, but adds new apps, such as iphoto, imovie, idvd, etc. I see a reason to charge for this.

This is coming from a guy who uses Windows, loves Linux, and has only used OSX for a TOTAL of 20 minutes (at a friends house)...so yeah, I am unbiased in this comment, since Linux is what I like best. Apple deserves this respect.

On my older G4 I still run Panther 10.3.9. Just 2 days ago AFTER tiger was released, they sent out a Update for FREE to fix some security issues. They do this all the time. I have an even older Mac with Jaguar and it was maybe 2 months back I was still getting updates for it too and FREE. What more can one want? Jaugar, Panther, Tiger ETC are like 98, 2k, XP.

Just a point of clarification - the iLife apps are separate from the OS now (an additional $80 charge).

I've got Tiger now, and from the front end, the only real obvious changes are the arbitrary gui changes, the speed increase, dashboard, spotlight, and numerous other nice updates to other programs, the dictionary (really nice), lightening fast version of Safari, VoiceOver (excellent for blind people, infact, I even tried it with the screen curtain on and it is so easy to use), among others. Apart from that, it's still like Panther (lol, in other words, very little is still like Panther). There's a few bugs, and I think that 10.3.9 is less buggy, but that happens with a .0 release. On the backend, there are heaps of changes, hence the speed increase, etc. I think it's worth the money (I got it for student price too, which was nice).
BTW DanDaMan315, the new iMac G5 is quite good for its price. Equivalent PC's (note that I use that term VERY loosely) cost the same, if not more (I have priced a similar system, and it's cheaper for me to buy the lower end iMac G5 at retail, than the other system at wholesale. It maybe different around the world, but it's the case where I am).

If you have never bought a Mac before, my take is: go buy one now, you are saving $129 right away ... he he.

Still many bugs to be ironed out, and an actual decrease in speed in some things. I'm sure whenever 10.4.1 comes out a few months from now tiger will be a much more worthy contender, but it seems like apple was rushed
Maybe releasing an OS before it's ready is something Apple is now copying from Microsoft? ;)

An OS is an OS. Just choose the one that you like and live with it. No point in fussing over it. If you want to criticize what is available, do yourself a favor and create your own.
