I never understood the insistence of some southerners to defend the actions of the Confederacy which happened 100 years before they were born. I'm a born and raised Georgian. Raised in the city that was burned by Sherman. Grew up surrounded by the Gone With the Wind mentality. And I would never defend the actions of the Confederacy, I know they were wrong. And I see much of that southern racism still present. Amusingly though the racism you see from your standard "redneck" is mostly based on ignorance without really any vitriol. It's the middle class and upper middle class southern yuppies that are hateful racists around here.

Around here, the rebel flag is seen more like a Dukes of Hazzard thing, no racism intended.
This has been a coal mining town since forever and a boom n bust oil town.
Everybody wears camo, drives big trucks, hunts, and enjoys the great outdoors.
The rink is the main hangout
Town is mostly conservative/Christian, a Muslim runs the Green Party
So much the same but everything with a Canadian slant

The South wanted Slaves. Who started shooting is entirely moot.

So the civil war was really about the north eradicating slavery and had nothing to do with Lincoln's desire to keep the Union together even though Lincoln was prepared to allow the south to keep their slaves if they remained in the Union?

Not this again.

Why did the South secede? Lincoln was a abolishionist, states were being added to the union as non-slave states, and they saw the writing on the wall.

Just because Lincoln's primary (indeed, only) objective was keeping the Union together, doesn't mean the war wasn't about slavery.

Obama and I, born a few feet apart, are more southern that most who post here and definitely more southern than the folk born in Texas or Florida.

Yeah, right. I believe that about as much as I believe 3,400 black babies were killed in Chicago. Take your dishonest, disingenuous schtick, lube it up with some Heritage Foundation Santorum, and shove it right up your pee hole.
I don't care about the thread, I just wanted you to know that I find your post offensive. Your post has transported me away from my safe space and I find it uncomfortable.

My grandfather told me that when was serving during WW2 he was introduced to Americans from all over the country and saw all sorts of different semi-cultures. He told me that some from the southern states would insist to him that the Civil War "ain't over yet." Always got a kick out of his stories. 😀

It's the LBD, the inability to believe that conservatives can't help being irrational, that they must be stupid instead coupled with a lack lf compassion. From a snake one expects snake behavior but it's irrational to kill every snake you see.

I was also born and raised in Georgia. I have traveled the world and in my experience there is just as much racism all across the USA. North South East and West. New York City is horrible.

I do not defend slavery. I was clearing up a point. I also feel that the Southern States had a right to a secession if they so desired. If you think the Civil War was all about slavery, then you need to read more. There was lots more to it than just that. If you believe Mr. Lincoln just wanted all the slaves to be free... then you are delusional.

What does Russia have to do with this thread?
They like their confederate flag with no stars 😀
It's Ukraine technically, pro-Russian separatist regions, calling themselves "Novorossiya"
Not sure what the history is behind them using a flag similar to the Confederacy.

You know nothing. Shutup. It is more than just slaves.

Not really. Slavery was the fundamental issue that broke the camels back. You need not feel shame for what happened, but you should feel shame for hanging on so proudly and dishonestly to that past.

The civil war was fought over a large range of issues.

But, pretty much, it was about slavery.

I understand if your state would like to present it's history in a more positive light, downplay the slavery aspect and place stronger emphasis on anything and everything else, but no, the civil war was about slavery.

QFT.

My anecdotal evidence....my blond/blue eyed kid didn't know there was a difference between him and the kids he played with at my wife's non profit until Gramps...🙄...told him. Born/raised in Long Island. "Those black people"...bastard.

With the exception of Boston, NYC, Chicago, Philadelphia, Hartford, Cleveland, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Madison, Providence, and Newark, most Northern cities aren't really racist though.
