I haven't read the articles, but I've heard of most of these things elsewhere.
Anyway, MO:
1) I've heard this happening also in the offices of some corporation whose name eludes me. They have essentially banned employees from displaying any kind of flag or other patriotic symbol. The reason is almost the same, not wanting to offend other people, which I agree is hella lame. I think the real reason has nothing to do with offending others, but is probably an attempt to keep the employees focussed on their work.
2) Using just the title from the link, but not having read the specifics of that particular article(please don't flame me if that author was an idiot), that statement is essentially correct. It is folly, IMO, to look at the US as some "White Knight, flawless and without reproach"(my quote). First consider who has been targeted by various international terrorist groups in the past. The vast majority of attacks have been on Israel, Europe, and the US. These acts are usually in response to an attack, but they are also in response to Imperialistic(remote establishment or support for the establishment of power structures friendly to the Imperialist) control. Because of this, the US and every country of the world can round up or kill every terrorist in the world, but if the policies of the US and some other countries don't change, more terrorists will rise up and take the place of the vanquished.
US Imperialism?
Though the US is not alone, Europe was and still is to an extent Imperialist, it's International policies are very similar to the policies that were the catalyst for the American Revolution. Certainly, the main issue of the American Revolution, taxation without representation with heavy emphasis on taxation, is not a part of US Imperialism, but US foreign policy is Imperialist at it's heart. A few examples:
a) Iran and the Shah. The US supported the Shah, not because he was a man of democratic philosophies, but simply because he was a supporter of the US. He was a cruel dictator that the People of Iran hated. Eventually the People of Iran were able to overthrow their puppet and establish a more Democratic form of government. To this day, Iranians and many other Third World nations are leary of the US, although I believe that the current freely elected Iranian government is much more friendlier to the US. Perhaps if US foreign policy was more of a mirror of it's rhetoric, that being pro-democracy/pro-freedom, then this current act may never had happened. Unfortunetly when it comes to US foreign policy, it seems that the non-Constitutionally protected institution of Capitalism is the driving force.
b) A more up to date and less Cold War related example, Columbia. Again, the US doesn't exact a monetary tax on Columbia, but it does require that the Columbian government cooperate with the US's "War on Drugs". This, IMO, is an example of the US forcing a foreign People into solving a clearly American "problem".
3) Might be true, but only because the citizens of evil nations are usually the last to know. Examples: Hitler's Germany, Soviet Union. This goes for my second point as well:
In a Demoratic nation such as the US, it is vitally important that the citizenry remain aware of their Government's actions! The Citizens of Democratically elected governments *are* responsible for their Government's actions!---remember this
