My kids will be graded in red whether at school or at home. If they bring home papers with purple corrective marks I'll color over it with red ink so they know that they'll usually be wrong in their lives and have those mistakes pointed out unless they work hard, study, and persevere. Good lord.

Even then, success isn't guaranteed, so be ready to be disappointed by life.

Failure is an important lesson in and of itself. Why does everyone forget that? If you half ass something and still do the same as everyone else, where is the incentive to improve?

i hope i dont get any of these types of parents at my kids school because if I do i will make it a point to go to every damn PTA meeting....

i forsee getting escorted out of these said meetings quite frequently due to firmly planting my size 12 shoe up their stupid asses

these bullsh1t has got to end..

i am hoping society comes to realize what nonsense all this is and society can look back at this time in our history as the 'wtf were we thinging' period.

Already in progress in some places, especially in grade schools.

I'm not sure what has been said in this thread because I don't want to read it all, so if I repeat someone else has said, forgive me.

I don't like the way red looks on the papers I grade, so I tend to grade papers in another color. I also circle missed questions, rather than putting an X through them.

I'm starting to warm up to the Bible codes, they predicted the end of the world in 2006. Both likely, and at this rate, an improvement.

Because people gloss over their own past, in some cases, and in many cases I think people never really develop the motivation to succeed to any great degree, they regard their failures as being attributable to factors other than their own effort or perseverence. And they pass that pussified, horrific outlook on life on to their children.

What sucks is that shame is no longer viewed as an effective teaching device anymore. Parents (especially middle class ones) pump their kids full of self-esteem and make them think everything they do is great. This is why, for example, we get the morons on American Idol who think they're Arethra Franklin but sound like dying cats. In Asian countries you get scorned and ridiculed when you F up. It may seem harsh at first, but you internalize it and learn from it. I don't know if red ink makes any difference from purple ink (personally I think it's BS) but if it does have a psychological impact then I'm all for it.

:)

I prefer red, it's much easier to see when skimming over something for important points.

Oh and um...I find red lights much too "abrasive", lets remove all red lights!

That was unnecessary, and in all likelihood, incorrect.

I remember I used to get hit with these long sticks by the teachers if I make any mistake or wasn't paying attention, sit in the corner with both hands raised for hours, my old gameboy taken away which was never returned to me, etc.
and these parents are complaining red ink is too stressful

I used to take these swimming classes when I was a kid

the way they teach you how to swim is put you in the water... and when you try to grab the edge, they STEP on your hands... while I'm choking on the water and tears are coming down my eyes from fear
I used to be scared to go to that class everytime. I really don't think Americans understand...

I rarely see teachers grading in red anymore; in fact, I just called one of them to make sure it's not some kind of policy. Turns out that most teachers just grade with whatever's within easy reach. Pen, pencil, highlighter, red, blue, green, orange, purple

There will be no America in 100 years. They'll erase the borders, and will make America join the newly merged North and South American contitents. After all, there shouldn't any countries because its so racist. We should all be part of the global humanity.
