The psycho of sharing boardband

Hay,
My name is Niv and I and currently studening mechanical eng.

I am looking for advise on sharing a broadband connection between freinds, living near on another.
A freind of may is considering a dial-up alternative. As he lives close-by I can hook-up with him via Wi-Fi. And so I can share the DSL connection with my room-mate too.

Setting aside the technological issues, I seek the advise of pepole who share a connection over some time.
How does it work-out? How do you split the monthly cost? Are you still freinds, or did it spur the relationship?

Thanks,
Niv

Excuse my spelling ;-\

Hello there,

I've learned one thing over time: Friends and business (i.e. money) do not mix. If you choose to share your connections anyway, here goes:

1. If the connection is split 50-50, then so should the bill. No questions, no fighting. The monthly bill is $50 (for example) then you owe me $25 a month.

2. Do you trust your friends' integrity enough to feel that he will come up with his share of the money ON TIME every month?

3. What happens if he can't pay? *insert "why I have no money" excuse here* Do you cut him off? That will ruin the relationship.

4. Related to #1, can your friend not afford his own broadband connection? Possibly he just wants to leech off you? Think about it...

I say it's not a good idea. But that is my opinion. Good luck, whatever you do.

my roommate and i currently have Optimum Online (19.99 for the first 3 months)

I'll be gone after the 3rd month so he;ll be stuck paying the 39.99 (or whatever it is) fee unless he wants to cancel for a 50$ fee.

i did go out and buy the router and the patch cables and got everything up and running, so we're cool about costs.

nivw, if the account with the ISP is in your name, you'll be held responsible for whatever happens on that connection. This includes the connection being disconnected by your ISP for abuse and this includes you being sued by the RIAA/MPAA/whoever.

My neighbors are great folks, but I don't want to be responsible for other people's actions.
