THE prom

I posted this last year around this time, and I have to do it again this year.

The word "prom" is NOT a proper noun. Thus, it requires an article. Proper usage is "I'm going to THE prom" or "I got my dress for THE prom"

From webster.com

Pronunciation: 'präm
Function: noun
Etymology: short for promenade
Date: 1894
1 : a formal dance given by a high school or college class
2 British : PROMENADE 2

No, you're wrong(I think). Prom is now basically a proper noun. Would you say that "I am going to McDonalds" is wrong? Of course not. You could say either "I am going to McDonalds" or "I am going to the McDonalds."

When I was in school, it was improper to use "and" after a comma. Did that change recently?
