why get dressed up to spend the evening with a bunch of people I only pretended to like? Tickets were expensive for what you get. A crappy meal in a rented room of some sort. Gee I can get a 10X better meal at 1/4 the cost and dressing up in a rented tux is optional.

Ditto man.

I would have been more incline if my best mate hadn't gone to the states. I also had work but I could have gotten out, I just didn't feel like going. People too fake and I thought it wasn't worth it. Nothing lost. I could have seen my chinese girl friend but she came back to England and I seen her a few times so thats alright.

btw I live in England and Prom is no where near as big here as in the states!

my "prom" is coming up, but it's not called that. I live in england, and at my school, at the end of year 11 (10th grade you'd call it, so we're 15/16) we have something called "the leavers ball". We get limos, cruise around, go to a hotel where there is music and stuff, pictures, all pretty much prom type stuff. But then being younger, i doubt i'll be gettin layed unless it's some sl*t, of which i don't go for. I have my eye on this really nice girl that has a different mentality then most girls [IE she's not a sl*t, and she cares about her future etc], and am hoping to go with her. If i do go with her, i know the experiance will be worth it. If i don't, then it will suck for sure

Good for you. :)

I think I'll settle down and try to find what I'm looking for.

when you find her, don't pour your soul out all at once...trust me, if it doesnt work, you're going to wish you had kept some of your innermost thoughts to yourself.

Ditto man!

DO NOT pour your soult out all at once!

ONLY do so if you know shes for the long run which I take she won't be but 'may' be but thats slim at your age.

Well good luck.

btw where do you live in England? I live in England also.

I think the only reason the prom is such a big deal is becasue most people don't go off to 4 year colleges and this is the last big party that they'll ever go to, might as well make it BIG. and this is as close to getting married as most girls are going to get for a few years.

where does all the extra money from selling tickets go anyway? Depending on the size of the class it most likely costs 1/3 of the money raised to have the prom. most likely less.

I'm betting that it only takes about 15-25 ticket sales to break even.

This years prom is going to cost about $20,000. It costs about $5,000 to rent out the california science center for one day (by the LA colliseum). About $10,000 for the food. $5,000 for the tables/decorations/service. $1000 for the dj/band.

I'm betting you're wrong. I'm a junior on student council at my school (yeah yeah, make fun of me all you want, now shut up and listen). Student council juniors set up and run the prom. Prom is in-fvcking-credibly expensive to put on. Everything costs a lot more than you'd expect it to, and then there's all the things that no one ever thinks about. Prom King/Queen's crowns combine to cost $300, for example. I don't want to even know how much a band would cost, but a DJ runs about $1000 at least for the dance. Renting the place is thousands of dollars. Photographers have to be paid a certain amount in advance. Decorations add up quickly.

So far we've spent close to $20,000, and we're not done yet. Course, are school has close to 4,000 students, so...

Aww..I didn't get to go to any of my high school proms either. Try being a shy asian girl in an all-white school and you'll understand why. :(

But Friday night was as close to a prom as I'll ever get.... the Chinese Student Organization at Rutgers University had a semi-formal event. It was at a really nice hotel...we had a 4 course meal...and lots of dancing and just being goofy and having fun. Pics will be up soon at the link in my sig. I had an awesome time and I'm so glad I got to share it with my lordjezobutt. :p

agreeing with the other two, as someone who was heavily involved in our senior prom planning, it's really expensive. To rent the location (for us ballroom in a philly hotel) food, dj, etc, it added up quick. and no, this thread isn't nec. representative of everyone's proms, but its close enough. some ppl loved theirs, some didn't, 5 years later, it'll just be a memory anyway. don't worry about missing yours, you got plenty of life left to make those memories.

Dude, You're still young enough you could take a girl to HER prom and enjoy the spectacle.
Not quite YOUR prom, but close!
Exactly. Happens all the time if you know enough younger chicks.
