My "10" was 4 days of suffering with a 5mm kidney stone. The amount of pain from that was staggering. I have a high pain tolerance but that was unbelievably painful.

The only thing that helped was IV toradol. Opiates just don't do anything for me.

I'm not looking forward to when I get my turn with those. They say it usually happens at age 30 and I'm 32 so it's pretty much a ticking time bomb. It's a one time thing though right? Like once you go through it once it's over?

I've never encountered anybody assessing their pain on a 10 scale. My medical visits are private. I suppose if you were in an ER you might be witness to such conversations. ???

Some folks never get them. Others get them over and over again. It's not a one and done. I believe diet plays a major role.

It can. You can get it analyzed so they can tell you contributing factors. When I had mine I decided I preferred to not bring a little strainer to work to pee in so I never found out what mine was.

my uncle first got one around 50, but nobody in my immediate family has ever gotten one. i drink a crapton of water which supposedly helps, and also don't eat much sodium (always test below the safe blood limit) or red meat.

except chocolate. i can't stop eating a little that stuff, but i really should.

Is chocolate that bad, a serious contributor to risk for kidney stones?

Chocolate is so divinely delicious, the better stuff. My current favorite is plain and almond Dove pieces. I don't eat all that much of it, maybe average a couple pieces/day.

i saw it mentioned as a possible cause on the mayo clinic site. it has a high oxalate content, and they say this is a factor in causing the stones. nuts also have a high oxalate content.

tbh this is probably not going to stop me either. every couple weeks i buy a bar of fancy %80+ dark chocolate - usually green & black's, but sometimes other kinds if they're on sale.

dove is good stuff too, so silky smooth.

Chocolate and poutine are probably my biggest weakness. Not together, separately.
Poutine? Just looked it up, originated in Quebec ~1950. Figure it's delicious, you are Canadian, so yeah. Never heard of it before. Chocolate? Well, it's everywhere. I'm not addicted, though. I'm not addicted to anything. Closest is coffee, but I have no withdrawal symptoms if I don't drink it.

lol I'm at that point myself. Used to only really drink coffee at work, now it's the first thing I do after I finish showering, even on a day off. I don't THINK I'm addicted, but alcoholics also think they arn't addicted to alcohol...

In the AM, coffee wins out. When I started traveling for work and couldn't have any until I got to the next office...ugh...headaches.
