The problem with online sports leagues

With the great system in place by all new ESPN games, sports gaming has gone finally where people wanted it to go: We Have Online Leagues. While there are still improvements that can be made and features that need to be added (Fantasy Rosters/Drafts, Keeper Leagues, etc), for the most part things are fantastic... specially with the inclusion of the League Websites.

The biggest issue with the leagues however, is the players themselves. I run an NFL 2k5 league that started out at 16 players. While it's tough to find people you know personally that are willing to put in the time, I resorted to Anandtech.

After the first games, a few players that went 0-2, 0-3, decided to cowardly stop playing. One emailed me and told me he'd like to leave the league because it just wasnt fun for him, and two others just stopped showing up to league night or responding to emails so I had to eject them instead of having the other 13 players wasting their time contacting their non-responsive opponent. I respected the original guy who emailed me to tell me his intentions, but just letting everyone hang is ridiculous. Now, anyone who has to play these teams will get a free win (with no stats).

When I invited people to the league, I posed the question "Do you plan on playing all your games?" I guess not only are these players cowards, but liars as well.

Personally, I suck at sports games but I love playing them and really dont mind if I lose (unless someone is using game exploits to win, which are in every sports game). My record is currently 0-4 in the NFL league, and I presume that I may only win 1 or 2 games in the last 4 games of the season, but I dont mind. It's fun and I enjoy updating the league website as the commish with news stories, polls and the like.

In closing, anyone who is out there in a league, or plans to be in a league, tough it out... practice, maybe fight another day, and you'll garnish much more respect from your opponents than just sticking your tail between your legs and scurrying off.

BTW: The two users who I had to boot from the league were: Falloutboy (gamertag: Radioactivenerd), and BlammoHammer (gamertag, same).

Well, would those guys still be playing in the league if their record was 3-0 versus 0-3? Probably...
