Justin Carter, the Texas teen jailed over a sarcastic Facebook comment, is reportedly on suicide watch.

"He's very depressed, very scared, and ... concerned that he's not going to get out," Carter's father, Jack, said in an interview with CNN Tuesday. "He's pretty much lost all hope."

Carter, 19, was arrested in February of this year following an argument he had on Facebook regarding "League of Legends," an online video game.

"omeone had said something to the effect of 'Oh you're insane, you're crazy, you're messed up in the head,’" Jack recalled to ABC affiliate KVUE in an earlier interview. "To which [Justin] replied 'Oh yeah, I'm real messed up in the head, I'm going to go shoot up a school full of kids and eat their still, beating hearts,’ and the next two lines were 'lol and jk' [all sic]."

Despite the teen's insistence of "lol" and "jk" -- internet shorthand for "laughing out loud" and "just kidding," respectively -- a woman who came across the comment on Facebook failed to see the humor. She alerted police after realizing Carter lived near an elementary school. On February 13, a judge authorized a search warrant. A warrant for Carter's arrest came one week later, reports WPTV.

Given recent school-related violence, the threat was taken seriously, meaning Carter has been charged with making a "terroristic threat," a felony that carries up to an eight-year prison sentence. His bail: $500,000, reports NPR, an amount his family can't pay, thus keeping him behind bars.

"Without getting into the really nasty details, he's had concussions, black eyes, moved four times from base for his own protection," Jack elaborated on Justin's current condition in jail. "He's been put in solitary confinement, nude, for days on end because he's depressed. All of this is extremely traumatic to this kid. This is a horrible experience."

Be more humane to have a ... reeducation camp.

Think about it... it's a step up from being left to rot.

He was indicted by a grand jury. The family should have focused on hiring an attorney/a better attorney back in Feb. than circulating petitions, etc. It doesn't appear he had counsel/competent counsel until July 2. I dont know if they thought it would go away or what, or if they didn't think it was serious, but its obvious his family is very naive. He was indicted for a third degree felony. The first thing the family should have done was hire proper counsel.

That said, there are three sides to a story, what happened, what one side said happened, and what the other side said happened. We have only heard from one side.

It's utter bullshit. What he said was way out of line, but not worth this police state ruining his life over. A few nights in county jail would have been enough. The paranoia this regime has created is ridiculous.

So much fail in this thread. The fact that the guy was joking should have been obvious to anyone who comprehends English. Obviously the human race has devolved to the point that it's possible to get yourself made a policeman or judge without having a mastery of the de facto language of the land. Those are the people who should be in jail for the protection of the public!

What exactly defines a terrorist now? That scale will keep moving more to the governments opinion and all for our own protection.

What? Really? Just an email from the local PD telling him not to be an arsehole would have been an overreaction to be honest.

Oh and it's not so much a police state as lots of little fiefdoms with no checks on the guys at the top.

In a rational society, I would agree, but this is no rational society. You should have enough common sense at age 19 to not say stupid sh!t when you know it could have consequences like this.

The US is most definitely in a police state, and has been since 2001.

I don't think that anyone would expect this outcome from his actions. It's not an expected consequence.

A police state has always suggested a very strong centralised rule to me. A lot of the problems like in the OP seem to be down to regions where the local sheriff and his buddies seem to have little or no oversight.
