I just noticed there are new MX cards out, Geforce2 MX 64meg. Someone explain the point? Thats a complete waste of materials if you ask me.

The point is to let you play smoothly at higher resolutions than with the 32mb version. It gives you more room for all your textures and whatnot so you don't have to worry about things slowing down a lot. Also, what would you rather have? 32mb or 64mb of video memory? :)

But the MX boards aren't really powerfull enough to run games at over 1024*768 well. So it seems to me that extra 32mb of ram is just a marketing gimmick.

Ram is so cheap now, it doesn't cost much more to put 32M more for the card manufacturer, but they can sell it for much more and get more profit.

Well, photoshop users and so forth who just need a good 2D card with lots of memory could really make use if it I think.

The amount of memory textures can use is not just limited by the resolution. If a game maker really tried hard they could quite easily out do the abilities of even the 64MB memory of graphics cards.

Also these cards may be faster performers, as the GTS did get a performance boost from having extra RAM to play with. Although as many have said, MX is a value part so maybe this is excessive, but now the GF3 is out, maybe some manufacturers are trying to make 64MB cards look attractive.

pidge, if someone wants good 2d, they'l look to something OTHER than an MX

the 64MB MX is a pile. It doesn't have the memory throughput to use the extra 32MB for anything worthwhile.

why not stick 64MB on a voodoo4?

Sorry. I was referring to driver stability and compatibility and performance, not visual quality.

I don't see the point either. The memory is such a bottleneck, I can't wait to see a 3fps improvement. Hah.

SV

PS- Glad I bought a GTS.

Ya my point was exactly what Sil and Wag stated. The G2 MX really isnt powerfull enough to take advantage of 64 ram. Im sure Nvidias whole point around releasing a new MX with 64 ram is just to make more money. Video card topic is kinda redundant now, but nonetheless, I think its Nvidias Marketing strategy is interesting and confusing at the same time.

It is just a marketing strategy for nVidia. Just to boost their sales with new products.
