Ok I went ahead and did the legwork and this is what I came up with:

Widget

The Inside (the can) Story - The new Floating Draught System works on pressure. A small plastic ball called a widget is filled with a mixture of nitrogen and carbon dioxide gas, placed in the can where it floats and can be heard moving around until the can is opened, releasing the gas and creating the creamy, foamy GUINNESS Draught.

The widget (the technical name for the ball thingie in the Guinness can) is somewhat like a stiff ping-pong ball, weighted on one side, with a hole in it.

When the can is closed at the factory, the entire can is pressurized with nitrogen, which forces a small amount of gas and beer into the widget. When the can is opened by the beer consumer, the gas in the widget expands, causing a rush of froth, which delights beer-guzzlers who are too schnockered to enjoy other forms of entertainment.

So this Guiness company wants me to buy their canned beer just so I can pop the can open and experience a plastic ball emitting a fart of gaseous molecules that cause my beer to foam all over my hand or the table. Sounds like too much fun to me. I think I'll stick to beer that doesn't fart on me.

It's still not as good as when it's on tap, though. No matter what invention they put in the can, it'll never be as good as a true pint of fresh Dublin Guinness on tap. :D

agreed, guiness doesn't belong in a bottle or can.

Now drunken losers everywhere can feel confident that, if they just carry around a couple cans of Guinness Beer, no one will ever accuse them of not having any balls.
