The thing is, it won't even be worthwhile for "midrangers" to get into the DX10 game for a while. The performance is a huge problem, and those who are accustomed to running at mediocre settings won't be enjoying the full experience anyway. Just because Crysis is a "full DX10" game doesn't mean it will be just groovy on most systems, and people will most likely either run DX9 or drop the cash on it. It's up to user priorities. The most cost effective long term move (midranger mindset) is to get the fastest card-for-the-price whenever they need to. Just because they wait, and try to invest in DX10 at a perfect price point doesn't mean that magic will happen and the future will be in hand. Even top of the line products like X1950s run games at "not so ultra" settings effectively and they are getting extremely cheap because of the DX10 hype. For users who aren't blowing the money on the absolute best anyway, the best choice is probably not to worry about DX10 for maybe even another year or so.

EDIT: I don't have personal experience with X1950s, I'm just making a point that many users still have "great success" with the now affordable monsters of the past (I even saw a thread praising the X850XT for being "still badass").

Meh, the 8800gts, which is faster then the x1950xt, and offers dx10 capabilities, isn't 'that' much more expensive. I think's it's still a pretty good bang for buck card. We're just gonna have to see how well it perform in Crysis when it comes out this fall. I wouldn't buy any other dx10 card though, unless I had cash to blow and could afford a gtx, or a 2900xt. The 8600gts and the 2600's are just kinda lame, and people are then indeed better of with a x1950xt.
