Has always bugged me, the supposed point of impact made sense, but where was the damaged area as a result of the wings hitting?

I'm just a nube when it comes to aviation but aren't the wings of airliners designed to break off in case of an impact for safety reasons...

to separate the engines and jet fuel away from the aircraft in case their is a chance the passengers survived impact.. I would imagine the wings would have torn off and entered the building though...
