I'd have to say I highly question the accounts told, but would be foolish to claim that nothing slightly awkward ever took place involving similar circumstances.

Maybe they did experiment with high frequency EMF, and they somehow caused the people exposed to it to hallucinate or lose conciousness and fall into a lucid dream-like state. Reading some of the accounts, the stories sound very dream-like.

Or maybe it's an urban legned combined with a lote of heresay and a good number of sailors who were plenty drunk on their leave?

Ther weren't plenty of sailors though. The ones that did speak are either on a deny or neither confirm or deny trip. I think the current story has been pretty much debunked though. OF course how hard is it for the government to make you look like a raving lunatic?

Yeah, the ship got degaussed. Read up on the history of ship degaussing and meagnetic mines in the war. Some layman walked by, and with no idea what he was looking at started a crazy rumor that got out of control. Imagine a giant game of telephone.

I've read up on it plenty.
Also the origin of the rumor is not exactly from a layman. Mentally ill? Possibly.

Anyway I've read plenty on the history. The point you propose could just be a convenient afterthought. I can see your point but.................

Occam's razor, my friend. Remember, no matter how many people are claiming that it was covered up, there'd be a LOT more people covering it up that would have let hard evidence slip by now.

Also, as a EE, there is NO way that a simple magnetic field could have brought about time travel. The fact is, we have a pretty good understanding of time, and magnetic fields don't seem to fit in to a time travel puzzle, nor have I heard any research from the period that looked particularly promising, unless you count jules verne as research.

Simple magnetic field? We have a good understanding of time? Anyway this doesn't have a lot to do with time but since your an EE I'll just shut up since there would be no use arguing.

Occam's razor......lol

kinda of OT but I've always felt that the subject and study of magnetism could lead to some remarkable technology. (beyond what we already have of course) In Asimov's books Foundation he talks about vehicles using the Earth's magnetic field as a means of propulsion. Since I'm not an engineer I can't say if it's truly feasible but it sounds fascinating at any rate.

It (magnetism) will surely lead to some great discoveries and no doubt already has.

It will be/ is the propulsion method for "secret" aircraft and possibly other vehicles. Hopefully I will get to see what I know must exist before I kick the bucket.

Somehow I knew that it was possible, I wonder how long before we see something like that available to the public. Magnetic run vehicles might also end up being safer than conventional transportation. If there's a way to polarize the vehicles so that they repel each other in the event of impact it could minimize damage in accidents.

Another thing I've wondered about that seems possible is every home using massive transformers and batteries. Imagine taking a small amout of voltage stepping it through a giant tranformer and storing the output into batteries for later use. This would provide huge energy savings but of course it would mean less profits for utility companies, unless they were the ones to market and sell the transformers and batteries (capacitors).

Hmm.... no.

a) The power it would take to 'magnatize' entire cars and the equipment required would make your car pretty damned heavy, aerodynamically crap, expensive, slow and a lot more dangerous (magnets are heavy). Coupled with the fact that electromagnetic fields are only effective at short distances - <1m - (forget what you see in the cartoons), a head-on collision between two cars isn't going to be dampened much by two repelling, iron-cored electromagnets.

b) Transformers take power and the system you're thinking of there is one of these fairytale perpetual motion/free energy from nothing machines that are flawed and simply cannot be built.

i am also an EE, and i don't think a magnetic field.. man made or natural, could achieve time travel like that...

yep - like "The Amityville Horror" and other such fabrications, this is fiction crafted from a real-life event.

Also, for you young under 30-somethings.............

It was one of my favorite 80s B-movies

I must have seen that film a dozen times on HBO during afternoons after school circa '85-86 ;) :)

That was the Manhattan Project, which was followed up by the Allan Parsons Project.

Which led to the construction of the jefferson starship....

Which, in turn, led to the Jamie Kennedy Experiment.

You've been X'ed!!!
