The Pentium M difference

OK, so I have seen the 'Pentium M' processor being marketed with laptops. And usually with a much larger price tag. I assume that it has something to do with battery life / processing speed, but can someone explain exactly what the difference between the 'M' and a standard pentium in my laptop is?

pentium M compared to p4 mobile. p4 mobile is a p4 chip. pentium M is currently a banias processor. it has more pipelines than a p3(10), but less than the p4(20), BUT it has a higher IPC than a p3. also with 1MB L2 cache. therefore a pure mhz to mhz comparison is not possible but roughly, a pentium M 1.6 is equivalent to a p4 chip at 2.6 depending on the tasks run

EDIT: the p3 has 12 pipelines NOT 10. athlons has 10.

To put it simply for the less than super uber techy nerdy, it does more work while consuming less power and generating less heat, thus creating relativley equal performance levels with the P4 while consuming close to 1/2 the power.
