If it was anywhere near 100% I would kind of be afraid.

It's not surprising at all that reviews are hovering around 50%.

Reasons:

- Religious "take the bible verbatim" types will argue it's not historically accurate
- Anally retentive people will argue that Jesus couldn't have taken that much punishment and lived
- Whiny bitches will complain that it's too violent/graphic
- This will be balanced by the fact that many Christians and middle-of-the-road religious advocates will like it
- Atheist/Agnostic types will either not see it because it has OMG JESUS CHRIST in it or will see it and like it because Jesus gets his ass kicked.

50% is about right for a movie that strikes such emotion as this one.

Well other than from evangelical types and people identifying themselves first as Christians, I've heard pretty consistently that the movie is just pretty mediocre, ignoring the subject matter...

The film critic in the newspaper today was of the persuation that the biggest problem with the movie is that it was not moving at all, merely numbing. He purported that the characters were bland and underdeveloped, and that it was not as historically accurate as hearsay would have it.

He did bring up a good point in mentioning that the justification for all of the gore and seemingly gratuitous violence was accuracy, however they did not portray Jesus naked or with loss of bowel control or any of that kind of thing. From what I know of Mel Gibson, he just likes to get people riled up. I will probably rent it once it's on Netflix, doesn't look worth the price of admission to the theatre.

I can not remember any movie that has received this much controversy before its general debut. It may take 20 years before it can be properly evaluated.

Then there are people hate it because they don't think its christian at all.

And that's the sad part.

I'm agnostic and I still want to see this movie. I have no idea why people are complaining about the violence. It says so in the Bible. Mel Gibson was making his interpretation of the Bible. I don't know why people are calling it anti-Semitic when it was true the Jews killed Jesus. The Romans killed Jesus as well. And who said this movie had to be moving and harmonious and happy? It's about Jesus' final hours, for crying out loud! Gibson is showing us the sacrifice Jesus went through to atone for OUR sins. All the horror he had to go through because we had committed so many sins. It's not supposed to make us happy. It's not supposed to move us. The movie is supposed to show us we all killed Jesus, not one group. And this is why my wife and I do not like organized religion. It causes way too much trouble over simple beliefs. Why is it wrong for one person to believe one thing and another person to believe something else? That's why I think the controversy over this movie is ridiculous.

Or we will see it because the death of Jesus is an undisputable fact, and that regardless of whether he was God or not, he was one of the wisest men ever to live.

I plan to see it at some point.

I heard it's a very polished piece, great pic shots with good attention to prop detail and language, but Gibson's portrayal of the Jews is anything but even-handed and his penchant for slow-mo during gruesome scenes leaves one with the impression he has a gore hangup.

Yup. I don't see any mention of God in that post...

Funny... I'm an Atheist and I am thinking about seeing it because I like the story... and I like other religious movies (like the 10 Commandments with Heston).
