To give you a little more info, I have Win98 and am going through a wireless router.

I've had several months of trouble free operation. Recently, when I select a website from my favorites list, I get the "The page cannot be displayed" error. If I keep hitting refresh, the page will eventually load. Same problem with other computers on my local network.

I bypassed the router by going directly from the NIC to the modem and still get the problem so it's not a firewall problem.

My ISP says there are no network problems.

What's going on?

browser isn't even looking for the server. I tried Netscape and am having
the same problem.

I'm going through a router so I thought it might be a firewall issue. I get the same problem going directly through the modem though.

I went through the Microsoft Knowledge base article and followed the suggestions to no avail.

Would appreciate some help figuring this out.

Thanks.

Since it happens in both Netscape and IE, it's not a browser problem. Also, since it happens both through the router and when the router is bypassed, it's not a router problem. Any firewall software installed? If so, that could be interfering with your connection. Also, the problem could be a DNS issue; you might try contacting your ISP and do some troubleshooting with them.

i would go to tools -> internet options -> connections, then remove your existing connection, and go through the wizard to add a new one. usually works for me.

I think that there's a misdiagnosis here. I do not think that it's a browser related problem. It's most likely your server that's causing the problem. Is it just a select few websites that you cannot access? If it is, then the problem is firewall related. If, however, you cannot access any site at some point, then it is most likely your server's connection is poor.

If it's firewall problem (most likely so if you're using Windows XP or NT), then change your internet connection. If it's a server issue, then you have to keep trying until your connection works right or call your ISP. You may have to update your network protocol.

I hope that helps.

make sure that MAC copying (or whatever it's called.....can't think of the name off the top of my head) is enabled in your router setting just to be on the safe side.
