I ordered a bunch of stuff from an etailer this Christmas. The amount of Styrofoam peanuts I had to through away was disgusting. It literally filled my entire garbage cart outside. I wanted to write them a hate letter. I can't believe places still use those. Disgusting.

When I ship stuff to people (FT forums, Ebay whatever) I almost always pack it with old. used newspapers. Works like a charm every time.

i keep a bag of old packing popcorn around just to use in FT forums.

when i ship, it's a combination of anti-static bag, paper, and packing peanuts. (and those amazon airbags when i can get em.)

i generally pack it full enough that nothing shifts. i haven't had a complaint yet.

Yeah I use the peanuts too if/when I have them. I have a small stash in the basement for such times. NORMALLY I just have and use the paper though.

Newegg and Amazon both, as well as many others, fail to package things to prevent damage from all sides. Often, the product is placed in an empty box, and the packaging material is placed over top of it. That's just fine - assuming that UPS/FedEx/Whatever will be kind enough to avoid damaging it on the unprotected side. When I package stuff, first some packing material goes in, then the item, and then the item is fully surrounded by more packing material. With the box closed, I can shake the box and hear almost nothing from inside, indicating that the item is held securely in place, and it's protected on all sides.

Stuff should be packed like it's going into a war zone. Warehouse workers don't care about your package. That's why package carriers have their own insurance policies, either in the form of money set aside each year for damages, or else some deal with an outside company to cover big screwups.
Stuff should be packaged like it's being shipped through hell.

And yes, I have already seen newspaper used as packaging material from an e-tailer.
Employees can probably bring in their own read newspapers; they don't have to bother taking them somewhere out of the way for recycling, and it saves the company money on packing material.

Popcorn makes decent packing material. I'm receiving packages from someone I know I'll ask for that, since it is yummier than the edible packing peanuts.

It isn't bad if you put the popcorn in ziplock bags. It works best for air-popped popcorn with some salt. I wouldn't try using cheesy popcorn with butter as a packing material.

i was just thinking throwing it in the box, not put it in bags. not sure i'd want to eat popcorn that some stranger made for shipping anyway though.

Fortunately that was readily apparent in your OP

I got a DVD-RW bare drive from Buy.com that came in a large box with NOTHING else in it. I'm still shocked that the thing wasn't in pieces. Oddly, that was two years ago and the drive still works.

i know you think you're really funny, but damaged in transit is a very real danger that 95% of at-viewers face. and not just the 60% that buy sex toys online.

I just got a 100 pc cakebox of verbatim dvd's from newegg that they wrapped in a single layer of large cell bubble wrap then placed it on top of a bundle of the paper in the OP's pic. The cakebox of DVD's arrived in excellent condition.
