I do not remember anyone over rating the Pinto or Vega. They were cheap economy cars. IIRC, the base pinto went for $1900.
Over rated:
1968 Rover, the US motoring press loved it. People who bought it hated it.
Aston Martin DB5 ?, James Bond made it famous but it still drive like a truck.
Most 1960's muscle cars (?), most werre not as fast as advertised.
Regarding the 60's muscle cars, the main reason many of them posted such slow real-world 0-60 times was the rotten skinny bias-ply tires they came with. The assumption was that the owner would swap the rears out with slicks at the strip. When you could get all that torque to the ground those cars were quite fast.
I'll grant you that the factories usually sent out doctored cars for magazine road tests and such, but since everyone was doing it, it still sorta worked for comparison purposes - like EPA milege figures are now. Besides, those cars were so easy to mod that nobody ever left them stock anyway.
edit: The most overrated car ever built was the original Chevy Citation X11.
