The Pinto was a great car. It revolutionized the compact car segment, and the engine is still being used today in the Ford Ranger I believe..and if not it was used until a very recent time.

They sold like hotcakes, and people loved them since they provided great fuel economy during the oil spikes.

I do not remember anyone over rating the Pinto or Vega. They were cheap economy cars. IIRC, the base pinto went for $1900.

Over rated:

1968 Rover, the US motoring press loved it. People who bought it hated it.

Aston Martin DB5 ?, James Bond made it famous but it still drive like a truck.

Most 1960's muscle cars (?), most werre not as fast as advertised.

I can't vote on a single most overrated car evar. I think any fad car is overrated: the new Beetle, the Retro Mustang, things like the xB, etc. Maybe the Civic qualifies for most overrated car ever.

Regarding the 60's muscle cars, the main reason many of them posted such slow real-world 0-60 times was the rotten skinny bias-ply tires they came with. The assumption was that the owner would swap the rears out with slicks at the strip. When you could get all that torque to the ground those cars were quite fast.

I'll grant you that the factories usually sent out doctored cars for magazine road tests and such, but since everyone was doing it, it still sorta worked for comparison purposes - like EPA milege figures are now. Besides, those cars were so easy to mod that nobody ever left them stock anyway.

edit: The most overrated car ever built was the original Chevy Citation X11.

Uhhh...how was the X-11 overrated? If anything, it was underrated. They were as fast as V8 cars of the time and very fun to drive.

I thought "overrated" meant that the car was not as good as people say or said it was. I do not remember anybody, except Motor Trend, saying anything good about GM X cars.

Anything made by Honda or Toyota is overrated. Good cars, yes, but gifts from God? No.
