POQUOSON - A 14-year-old Poquoson boy died on Sunday afternoon when he was pulled into a wood chipper while working on storm cleanup.

Frank Anthony Gornick died at the scene on Wagner Road. His name was released to the media this afternoon after police finished notifying his family members, most of whom live outside of the area. A Facebook page in his memory had more than 600 "fans" by noon today.

Gornick was an Honor Roll student and a member of the junior varsity football team at Poquoson High School, according to Principal Bernie Wright.

"He was a young man that was very well-liked and respected in the school and the community," Wright said. "I heard today that many students expressed their feelings of Frank as someone they felt comfortable going to for advice when they had problems. I would like to say he'll be missed by all the students and staff at PHS."

Gornick was working at a location on Wagner Road, using a shovel to load tree limbs and debris into the hopper of a wood chipper. His shovel got caught in the blades of the chipper and pulled him into the hopper, where he died instantly..

Grief counselors are at the high school and middle school in Poquoson today.

:( oh man, what a way to go.

he must've got the shovel caught in there and didn't let go of the handle. those chippers pulled him in with such force i assume that he didn't really have a chance. R.I.P

I have 100s of hours on a chipper. There is a safety above and below the feed table. I don't see how you could be pulled into one unless your glove or clothing were hung up on something. Even then, it would be hard not to trip a safety.
Poor kid.

it was a commercial woodchipper

On Sunday, Gornick had been gathering debris in piles and feeding them into a wood chipper attached to a truck. Gornick is believed to have used a shovel to push debris into the chipper when he was "pulled in completely," Bowen said.

Sad as hell. :(
I grew up in a farming community and equipment claimed a young man like that every year or so.

This is what I am used to, maybe he was using something bigger.

another local link had a video clip showing the area with some tarp pulled up around it. the one they were using looked like it was a self propelled unit.
