You guys remember when ATi released the X1300, X1600 and X1800 XL first, and then later came with the high-end part of their top series (X1800), the X1800 XT ? Personally I told myself that it wasn't so cool, indeed, for the enthusiasts market, but since there is less of them than those willing to go for the more affordable "performance" variants than it made some sense after all.

I myself kinda jumped onto the occasion and bought myself the performance part, although I still regret it today to some extent, because back then ATi had to release the unstable XT models and diminish some of the circuity, frequencies and label it "XL", which in turn has an unstable Core at more than 550 Mhz (from 500), although the Memory is the exact same (but the lesser circuits layouts is limiting it a little) and can reach speeds very similar to that of the XT's frequencies at stock speed. But that's another story and I hope it isn't the same with R600.

But talking of that upcoming generation we're so eagerly waiting to at least see performing and perhaps get rid of both legs to buy just one of those, I was wondering something ...

As far as I know, this time around, AMD/ATi is planning to release the enthusiast-oriented (aka high-end) variants first, and then later come up with the performance one(s), known as "R600 XL" (or shall it be X2800 XL ?). I know I am particularly waiting for that variant in question, rather than the super expensive (for me anyway) and perhaps noisy beast.

Well I'm kinda asking, actually, will it be the case ? And, what you think about that move, if any marketing thoughts are actually behind it.

I think the only reason Ati would release a 'XL' part first at this point is due to yet another delay with the 'XT' model.
