The Orange Box - Portal

I just picked up Portal because a friend suggested it. I didn't know it was part of The Orange Box though, are these worlds connected somehow? Will I understand whats going on in Portal if I haven't played through the regular game? Will I understand the regular game if I haven't played the other Half-Life games? Thanks.

Portal is really a completely separate game from Half Life 2. There's one or two references but it's really not very important.

If you can find an old copy of the original Half Life for the PC (they mighta made it for the first Xbox too) and play through it, then jump to HL2 and the following episodes.

Team Fortress 2 is completely separate as well, it's multiplayer only.

I was under the impression that "Portal: Still Alive" would include the original game in it.
