Hey guys, I am looking at buying a Logitech MX518 to improve my gaming. I had a regular ball mouse and just bought an Microsoft optical (which sucks, $20 walmart). Just want to know which mices you guys have come from and now use and how much it improved your gaming. Thanks.

P.S. A good recommendation for a keyboard , everyday and gaming use would be appreciated too. ;)

Why? I used a IBM optical mouse through gaming until I switched yet to another generic mouse. And those were my prime gaming days (clans, etc). Now I have my Mx510... and it's not a big different.

If you really want a gaming keyboard, get the Saitek Eclipse.

I think its more for decor and "cool" factor than necessarily "a mile's gain in the frag rankings." I mean, I don't have a 40-inch vertical after I put on some Nike shox, but I feel cooler, so I might play a bit more aggresively. Part of it is placebo effect, but then again, there's nothing wrong with the placebo effect as long as you are gaining something from it.

My first pwning mouse was the MS Intellimouse Explorer. Now it's all Logitech Baby! ;) MX518 that is. Went from a 510, which I might add has no big differences. Waste of money IMO.

Cheapie MS Optical (Ownage) -> MX310 (Ownage) -> MX700 (Dead) -> Logitech Optical Wheel Mouse (Ownage)

I can only determine that it was either the shape, weight, or ever so slight lag with the MX700 that caused me to suck. I'm sticking with wired ambidextrous shaped optical mice from now on.

Well I thought the dpi adjusting would help in gaming, but i guess it's not that big a deal. *shrugs*

Moving from a logitech optical to my Razer Viper I did notice it was smoother. The ability to change vertical/horizontal speeds and acceleration was cool too.

I've went from a crappy Intellimouse Explorer ball mouse to a G5 and MX1000, and I suck just as much with all three of them. Really, a mouse will not improve your gaming significantly.

A new mouse doesn't help you, if you suck you're still going to suck. You're just going to do it much more comfortably. It's like saying you'll be a racer just by jumping into a porsche.

Pretty much any optical mouse will work fine for gaming so long as it doesn't lag horribly or something. For example, don't buy cheap wireless mice that are likely to have a lag times. Optical mice with a nice long cord; that's where it's at! Only need 2 buttons + wheel (maybe 3-4 buttons if you really dislike using the keyboard)

Yes, it's certainly funny how a bad mouse can ruin your performance, and yet a really good mouse does basically nothing.

That's because you instantly notice a step down in performance, but you have to adjust to improvements. I didn't realize at first just how crappy the original MS optical was until I used a Boomslang for a little bit and then tried to switch back, being 100% honest, it was unplayable. As for the original question, the Razer Viper was the first optical I felt was actually good enough to game with (as compared to the best of the ball mice), shortly followed by the introduction of Logitech MX series, though I personally don't like the shape of the Logitechs.
Funny thing though, still to this very day if I "had to" play the best game of my life, I'd select an absolutely perfectly (bolded because they are a rare find) functioning Boomslang 2000 over any optical available.

It does help when sniping or using a bazooka in games like DOD:S.

Or when sniping out noobs that stand still. The mouse that got me was my MX510, donated to family laptop.

I went from a crappy Logitech Mouseman Wheel ball mouse to a MX510. I used to be a noob, now I'm the pwnerer of noobs with the MX510.
As for the keyboard someone mentioned the Saitek Eclipse, which would be my choice. If you play a lot of RPGs or games that use a lot of key combos (like the buy commands in CS), the Saitek Gamers' Keyboard is also a nice choice with the addition of the programmable command pad, though you sacrifice the LEDs on the individual keys. The Logitech G15 is an awesome gaming keyboard, but it's probably excessive for your needs.
