We hold that all individuals have the right to exercise sole dominion over their own lives, and have the right to live in whatever manner they choose, so long as they do not forcibly interfere with the equal right of others to live in whatever manner they choose.

Governments throughout history have regularly operated on the opposite principle, that the State has the right to dispose of the lives of individuals and the fruits of their labor. Even within the United States, all political parties other than our own grant to government the right to regulate the lives of individuals and seize the fruits of their labor without their consent.

We, on the contrary, deny the right of any government to do these things, and hold that where governments exist, they must not violate the rights of any individual: namely, (1) the right to life -- accordingly we support the prohibition of the initiation of physical force against others; (2) the right to liberty of speech and action -- accordingly we oppose all attempts by government to abridge the freedom of speech and press, as well as government censorship in any form; and (3) the right to property -- accordingly we oppose all government interference with private property, such as confiscation, nationalization, and eminent domain, and support the prohibition of robbery, trespass, fraud, and misrepresentation.

Since governments, when instituted, must not violate individual rights, we oppose all interference by government in the areas of voluntary and contractual relations among individuals. People should not be forced to sacrifice their lives and property for the benefit of others. They should be left free by government to deal with one another as free traders; and the resultant economic system, the only one compatible with the protection of individual rights, is the free market.

Libertarian party statement of principle.

Hey, hows it going! Come on down to Eugene, OR and join up with the Anarchists (sp?). ;)

Seriously, I do believe in personal freedom, but the Libertarian party takes it too far. Too much freedom tramples on other peoples rights.

libertarianism is pathologically political, another form of machiavellianism.
libertarians need to cure their phobias of democratically elected government.
hell, they need to sit down, relax, discover how to sleep quietly. sheesh

I'm a Libertarian and think that we are on a slow march towards the Libertarian state.

If you look at history you will see that other forms of governments were very strict and cast aside the individual for the greater good. The Democrats are the ones who today use this as there propaganda. They charge Republicans with not being compassionate and caring about the common man. This is the same tactic that the communist used.

The communist promised the working man a job, place to live, and food. Of course they couldn't deliver and neither can the Democrats.

You really don't know the first thing about the implications or even the philosphy of Libritarianism. But unlike the past idiots feel the need to express themselves these days without regard to the fact that speaking it doesn't make them less of an idiot.

we don't have a democratically elected government ? do you think we live in a democratic dictatorship, or whatever passes for anything less than a libertarian utopia. i think libertarianism perverts common sense and takes the inalienable rights outlined by our
republic's founders to extreme ends. prohibiting all government involvement in matters of
private property, for example, is just silly. believing our government 'seizes' the
'fruits' of an individual's labor has a sweet anarchic ring.

Ah rahvin, the great thing about a libertine world is that people like you will have no say over people like me and vice versa so we can just hate each other from a distance(and make no bones, I do hate you..you are an enemy of liberty)

<< The communist promised the working man a job, place to live, and food. Of course they couldn't deliver and neither can the Democrats >>

There never was a communist government. It has never existed. What people generally think as communist governments (old russia and China) are really dictatorships operating under the guise of communism. They couldn't deliver because they never intended to. They weren't really communist!

And, by the way, a real communist government probably wouldn't work anyway. Too many lazy people to make it work. If there weren't, then communism would most likely be the best form of government. But people can't operate under communism. Just against their nature I guess.
