the one thing keeping me away from xbox 360...

Yeah, I think that will be my issue for now. It's on wireless G, but by the time I would consider getting one of these babies, I will hopefully have wired network ports where they need to be.

Xbox 360 and Media Center: Living room of the future

A movie with Xbox developers explaining the functions of the xbox 360 with Media Center. I'm pretty sure they discuss the issue you're asking about and others. They say if you're going to stream HD you should use wireless a or ethernet cable.

I stream HR HDTV rips of Lost and Surface and anime fansubs (similar in size to HD rips) and whatnot over my laptop over wireless B with no problem. Those guys are loony. An HR rip of Lost is ~700mb. That's a little over 10mb per minute. Wireless B does better than 10mb/minute.

I use my modded xbox now primarily to stream vids from my PC to the living room. It's awesome the 360 can do this by default now so I'll have two at home which can do this.

Oh and of course it has the other advantage of better looking games.

The one thing that is disappointing me about the 360s multimedia capabilities is looking like you are not going to be able to stream DiVx or Xvid video.

Well, if it has a 'My Videos' Function like MCE 2005, I would think it could. However, you would probably need to load the codecs...

That would totally suck, that would be just as bad or worse than not being able to do HD.

Right now it is looking like it will only stream WMV, mpeg1, and mpeg2 video formats. I sincerely hope they change that as they will gimp the 360 as a media extender device if they do that. Almost all of my video is in Divx/Xvid.

Yeah, no ******. And by videos you mean porns.

Actually, with a wife and two kids in the house and an open office, I couldn't watch porn even if I wanted to. All my Divx/Xvid stuff is anime released in Japan, copies of my DVD collection, and TV shows.

I still think M$ could sink their ship by using a regular DVD-ROM drive and Sony could also fark itself over with Blu-Ray (althout the recent events in the BD-ROM/HD-DVD war seem to favor Blu-Ray slightly).

MS made the right move I think. Neither HD-DVD or Blu-Ray will be ready for a release this holiday and the cost of either will jack up the price of the console.

Apparently Gates is super pissed all the folks jumping ship from HD-DVD to Blu-Ray.

What a fscking mess it would be if Blu-Ray became the latest VHS and HD-DVD like Betamax (or the other way around, I guess). Wouldn't MS be forced to put Blu-Ray drives in the 360 sometime down the road? I can't even imagine...

I've never had MCE and am understanding it's basically XP with additional features.

I watched the video linked above and they just keep mentioned MCE - so I'm still not sure... if I have just XP Pro, can I still browse those shared folders through the 360 (like I do now with XBMC on XBOX1) ?

Is the 360<->MCE interface going to feel like XBMC ?

Yes, MCE is essentially XP Pro with Media Center Software. If you have XP Pro you'll still be able to stream music, pictures, and video (just no HD). You also won't be able to use any Media Center funtionality like watching and recording TV.

I haven't seen alot of the 360 MCE interface but I would think it would feel closer to the Windows MCE interface.

The ridiculously stupid price bundles aren't the one thing keeping you away?

I know that's what's killing the deal for me. At the moment, I'm staying on the Nintendo boat. They look like they have to really revolutionary equipment out there. I'll have to see how it plays out though. I don't buy consoles until they age for at least 6 months.

Correct me if I am wrong, and point me to the backup material, but it DOES support HD from MCE 2K5.

Explain. The two price points dont seem stupid to me.

Check out your local Gamestop or EBGames. It's almost impossible to just buy a console. They're forcing bundle deals on you.

Yea, thats gamestop and ebgames for you. Just like when the PSP came out. But then you could go to best buy, wal mart, target, meijer, and the list goes on and on and just get the PSP by itself.
Same thing will hold true with the xbox 360, so theres no need to get your panties in a bunch.

Yep. I've already got three Xbox360s on preorder through EBGames. Just the $400 console package. No bundle. You were only forced to bundle if you were purchasing over the web.
