RESALE VALUE!

My wife has an iPhone 3g and I have a Palm Pre on sprint. She hates AT&T service and her contract is just about over, so I suggested that she sell the iPhone in order to buy a Pre.

She sold, in 15 minutes of posting on her facebook, a nearly 2 year old iPhone for $300.

Which reminds me of the time I sold a 2 year old iMac for $1700, while the re-sale value of my AMD system's probably $200, if that.

P.S. I'm not a fanboy, in fact I ditched all things apple in favor of my awesome zune/pre combo

I definitely give them that. They also have nice packaging. I got a free 1st gen Shuffle for filling out a credit card application, and marveled at the way it was packaged.

I really do appreciate the changes they inspired in packaging. My palm pre was beautifully packaged (using recycled materials at that) and Microsoft/Samsung among others now realize that unboxing is part of the buying "experience."

I love their resale value as well. I was able to sell my 2006 15" laptop and purchase a new 13.3" for a total of ~$50 after selling the free ipod touch that came with the back to school special. Oustanding.

Sold my iPhone 3G as well to get a Pre. The sale price of the iPhone more than covered the ETF I had to pay AT&T and the cost of the Pre. Couldn't argue with that.

Yes! I even sold one of those heavy duty G5 desktops for a 4 figure amount AFTER the transition to intel. I was so worried that I now had an obsolete system, yet someone bought it hours after I listed it on Craigslist.

You know, I used to think that IBM thinkpads (before Lenovo came along) had terrific resale value. It was almost impossible getting a T42 for under 1100, and then, with a shoddy 256mb ram and 40gb hard drive. Back then the T40 and T41 were still worth quite some resale value. So when I saw a dual core T60 for under 1000, I was very psyched and bit.

Fast forward a few years later. You can get a refurb T61 or a new T400 for under $600. Now, the resale value on those old Thinkpads isn't so hot...

I can understand the resale value on the iPhone, because people want them to use with T-Mobile. But the resale value for Macs just seems absurd to me. I guess it could be because there are relatively few that get resold. Looking on eBay, there are 1.83 GHz Mac Minis selling for $400-450 (completed listings). That came out in 2006-2007, it should be selling for $200 now.

Status update "Anyone want to buy a used iPhone 3g?"

It worked out well for since many of her grad-school classmates have family outside of the country, and one bought it for her uncle.

I agree with you - I was looking for a used 1st gen mini to use as a media set top box but it's VERY difficult to find them for less than $400. At that point it makes much more sense to just buy a refurb from Apple directly.

I'm in the camp of the "who gives a fuck about packaging"

I'd rather them shave a few dollars off the price and package it normally. To me, the "experience" of unboxing isn't important. That crap ends up in the garbage or fire pit. I bought the product to use it, not to build life memories. I have a life for those needs. The only important aspect of packaging for me is how well the object is protected from damage during shipping.

Are you seriously going to tell your grandkids about your amazing "unboxing" experiences when you were younger?

I broke down from curiosity and got a Mac Mini a few years ago.
I admit they are very professional in packaging and presentation and built design and all that stuff.
But I think thats just done to make people feel like they didnt get ripped off or something.

Computer sucked. Especially for the money. I turned in back in next week.
Actually, they are also good about taking stuff back, which is nice.
