Swedish video game and media company Embracer Group today announced the purchase of Middle-earth Enterprises (MEE) from The Saul Zaentz Company, acquiring all its IP for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit in the process.

One of the most-exciting aspects of this annoucement for Tolkien fans is Embracer’s suggestion that it will explore “additional movies based on iconic characters such as Gandalf, Aragorn, Gollum, Galadriel, Eowyn and other characters from Tolkien’s literary works.”

Through MEE, The Saul Zaentz Company held a huge catalogue of worldwide rights to motion pictures, video games, board games, merchandising, theme parks and stage productions all relating to The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit , as well as matching rights in other Middle-earth-related literary works authorized by the Tolkien Estate and HarperCollins.

Announcing the deal, Embracer Group CEO and Founder Lars Winger said he was excited to be bringing The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit IP into the Embracer group.

Now we wait to see if amazon and this can manage to kill this saga.

I have Prime and will most likely give Amazon's LOTR a shot but my expectations are low.

Seems like all the estate matters are done with after Christopher's death and now the free-for-all begins.

My thoughts exactly.

What has happened to Star Wars and Marvel is going to happen to LOTR.

What made LOTR special (As well as Star Wars) was part nostalgia, part strict control of the IP so it wasn't diluted to oblivion. At first a bunch of new content looks like a godsend to the fanbase, but the monkeys paw will close and it will undoubtedly turn into a mountain of low quality garbage to wring out every last dollar from a once venerable IP.

I, for one, welcome the incoming soap opera, Armenelos - City of Kings, with enough sex to make the producers of Rome blush.

And what about some ACTUAL dwarf-on elf-porn? :p

(Gimli cucks Aragorn with Arwen?)

EDIT: Seriously I have no doubt whatsoever that Tolkien's legacy will be tarnished.... doesn't mean I have to watch much of it.

I'll give Amazon a chance though.... Wheel of time has been at least "okay" so far and it's a 100x more complicated story then anything Tolkien ever dreamed of!

OK, let's start by agreeing that pr0n isn't really entertainment. It's much closer to the type of drugs that are mainly prescribed prn (pro re nata) - to take as needed. You all probably see where I'm going with this. You get a bunch of guys together to do manly things, like watching other men f*** each other up in various ways. When was the last time you invited a bunch of friends over, even to watch timeless classics like The Green Door or Deep Throat. OK, sure, maybe at your old frat, but frats are sort of gay anyway. Just google 'fraternity hazing rituals.'

As a general rule, it's not wise to start mixing your recreational chemicals. Of course there are plenty of exceptions tho. Crank with a side of Valium, weed and coke (+ JD and coke), etc. But in such cases, there's a certain synergism that makes well managed risks worth it.

On the other hand, consider this hypothetical. You're walking around in the mall with the new gf and see a whole store front devoted to this series. Is this really the best time to bring forth a raging stiffy?

It is not.
