The one good thing about having a Ford 302 die...

There's about seven trillion of them out there and you can buy a used one for about $150. I think I'll have a project motor in the next week or two. Be a few more weeks after tha before the car is running again.

What happened to your motor?

Cracked piston/burnt rings + knocking rod and I think the oil pump might have been going out.... It was basically dying, then I killed cylinder #8 by running it too lean.

If one rod was knocking, I'm sure they all were.. unless you had one plugged oil galley or something.

Sounds like your engine was on it's last.. crank. 😛

Yeah, I wasn't expecting it to last a whole lot longer, I was planning on replacing it this summer anyways. Oh well, looks like I'll have a new one a bit early.

notfred, what's the best option in your opinion, buying a used 302 & rebuilding it vs. a new crate 302 motor?

You mean 150$ for a used, not rebuilt one.. right?

Are you going to get another 302? Why not go for a 350? Performance parts are a dime a dozen for them, aren't they? I don't know much about it, maybe there are performance parts readily available for the 302 also.

Depends on how much money you have 🙂

The rebuild is a lot cheaper, but it's a lot more work. I don't think reliablilty is a big concern when you're pushing close to 400hp, because it's easy enough to break either the rebuild or the crate motor. I think you can get a perfectly decent motor either way, and it should be pretty reliable as long as you have it tuned properly. Try not to lean it out too much and break pistons.... 😱

I see what you mean, I was looking at the reliable/cost effective solution, thanks 🙂

sounds like a good time to drop in a 351 and really feel some power

Then he'd have to beef up the tranny and rear end too right?

Rear end no... Tranny Yes.... But I would think that he doesn't have a stock tranny in there anyway since he has/had a supercharged 302
