the old "burn-in" question...i know it doesnt help OC, but is there a point to doing it?

I know the "burn-in" does not help with OCing (or at least that seems to be the more truthful opinion)...but, is there a point to doing it? Some say that the burn-in is good for testing stability...

If so, how long should I burn-in? And which program is best? Also...when burning in, do you leave the computer running for the entire period (minus troubleshooting time), or just several sessions of "burns"?

And...on the point of stability- If im going to play games, surf the net, listen to mp3's, do school work (word, excel, powerpoint, etc etc)...is an extended burn period of like a week really necessary??

thanks,

"...but is there a point to doing it?"

No point, imho. Now if you are looping some intensive app for an extended period of time, as a "test" of stability... That makes perfect sense. That gives you more of an indication that the system won't lock up at a later time.

I agree with Wingnut. No point besides testing and if you really want to run you processor hard then you should just join one of anandtechs distributed computing teams like TACube (go CUBE) or Team SETI.

It's just a good indication of stability. Not to mention it's good if you sell prebuilt computers for a living, since you'd like to have less service calls for "un-stable" computers. 😉

lol 🙂

yea...it would be good to test then...i h8 it when the comp locks up randomly, and i loose 4 hrs of work...hehe or i get locked out of a CS game 😀

ok...next thing tho...how long should I run these programs?? a whole day at once? some ppl recommended a WEEK...a bit much imo, but then again, i dont really know...neway...12 hrs? a day? 2 days? how long?

Personally I will leave the PC running full load stress testing apps whenever I am not using it eg overnight or while I am at work. I usually do this for at least a week because I can NEVER leave it alone so I might test Speed X to be stable and as soon as I find out it is I will be trying Speed Y.

a burn in test is a good indication of how well your system is cooled. if your temps get really high when running cpu intensive applications, then you know you have a problem. it's a also a very good indication of how stable your system is.

my burn in/stress test was as follows:
prime95 torture test
rc5 cracking
playing quake3
winamp
200mb file transfer over lan

where can I get rc5 and prime95? and is it hard to setup/do?

what about SiSandra Soft? I know it's unreliable for benches...but I need a reference...show whether my changes are improving or hurting performance

It's also hard to return a defective chip if you've modified it, i.e. penciled it. Run it first to make sure everything is fine then make that puppy cook!
